Hey y'all, The pre-amp tube that came in my Z28 is a JJ 12AX7 (the other is a EF86 of course). The tube chart and manual call for a 5751. A little research on the web tells me that the 5751 gives a little less gain. Will it that make that much difference in the tone? I have a good stash of 12AX7s & zero 5751s and wondering if its worth the bucks to change. There must be a reason why the good doctor tubed it like he did, it sounds freakin' great. I think I just talked myself out of the change. Thanks guys.

Find the tube you like and go with that one. The manual is strictly a reference.

I'm using a 12ax7 for more gain and am happy with the results. Try out what you have first

It is always handy to have spare tubes for your amp (power, pre, and a rectifier), and a good NOS 5751 is a great one to have on hand. They drop right in and can give you a different dynamic (more headroom) to the amp if/when needed. I thought I had read that the Dr. switched to 12AX7's because he could not buy enough 5751's that met his requirements re this amp. But as mentioned, go with what sounds best to your ears. Congrats on a great amp and welcome to the forum.
