Hey gang...
I used my Ghia this past weekend at a show (2 nights) had no problem Today when I went to turn it on it wasn't doing anything...So I looked in the back at the tubes, All were lighting up except the 5Y3S. Could it be just the 5Y3S tube? wanted to try it out on my new Z-Wreck cab but couldn't, thanks for any help

Rec tubes don't light up bright like power tubes. It is possible none the less. How old are the tubes in general?

Tried the trouble shooting, still nothing....I will order a complete set of new tubes tomorrow and replace them when they come in, If that doesn't work then I guess it will have to go for a DR's appointment Ken

Took the tubes to a buddy who ownes a repair shop and he tested the tubes... It was the Rectifier tube that was dead...Pop'd a new one in and she's good to go...Sounds REAL good with the Z-Wreck cab.... Ken

Ken,a note for future reference: a bad rectifier still lets the pilot light come on, but there will be no sound whatsoever from the speaker.

I recently chewed my way through two fuses in swift succession on my Ghia 25th anniversary head (black, 11/50: pictures soon). I would turn the amp on, and there would be nothing - no valves lighting, no pilot. OK, so down to Maplins to buy new fuses; slotted one in and the new fuse failed immediately; very brown indeed when removed.
This was a new experience for me with any valve amp (and I've had many over the last 40 years), but taking out all the valves and replacing the lot with what spares I had to hand seems to have sorted the problem; threads elsewhere seem to suggest it's the rectifier that might be the guilty party's this case..my favourite 5Y3 is the Phillips JAN type. Great in my silverface Vibro Champ, and Lonestar Special; these are beautifully built valves.
BTW, in the UK Dr Z amps are supplied with power leads which look as if they could feed the National Grid; these are really big and brawny compared to the usual kettle leads. Is there the remotest possibility that these might be responsible for some kind of power surge that blasts the fuse to oblivion? I have no grasp of the physics of electricity, but if anyone is wise to this possibility, it would be interested to hear more...
