First of all, I know, they all sound good. Most any QUALITY amp(and any Z certainly is that) can be tweaked to sound great with most any guitar, I get that and agree. I got 4 dissimilar guitars: a tele, a strat, a 335 and Les Paul(with P-rails/triple shot rings). I can get usable tones out of all of them, not just usable but pretty killer tones. But in terms of what "I" think sounds best with MY Z28, a 2x10" combo, Z speakers, Tungsol RI 6V6's and a 5751, I keep going back to single coil guitars. My tele just rules thru it, as does my strat. The Les Paul(a high quality, rewired copy actually), sounds great, but in P-90 mode. I like humbuckers thru the 28, but frankly don't find myself LOVING them, and I don't know why. Like em with heavy overdrive, ala 3-3-3, they're ok clean, but the in betweens/edge of clean-crunch not as much. For example, at anything other than 3-3-3 levels, say at like 1-12-1, I prefer my OD pedal to be on. The guitars clean up better via the volume knob. More of a knob turn, but adds something I can't quite put my finger on.
What am I getting at here? What do you all think sounds BEST with the Z28? I.e., I know MANY artists have lived off of strat thru Marshall, but the general consensus is that Les Paul thru Marshall is the match made in heaven. And in terms of "best matching," and thinking about my NEXT Z down the line, is there a member of the Z line up that just shines with Gibson-esque guitars? Remedy? Thoughts?

I think for most folks here LP>Rem would be a great sonic match, sure. Also the Antidote and, for a lower wattage amp, the Ghia is superb with humbuckers. I love my Strats and my Collings 290 through the '28. Teles are good, but maybe a little better with the EZG or Maz 18 NR. My R8 sounds great through anything, but I like it with a lot of gain for blues playing. Humbucker cleans generally don't do much for me.

I play a LP and a 336 out of my 28' more than my tele, way more. Even on a 9-9-9 settings it sounds so good. I usually use it as a base tone and flavor with pedals. In situations where I have been able to open it up more I did dig the slight break up. Not that I do not dig the tele through it, it's just not what I grab first. I prefer a MAZ or Ghia with my tele, something about el84 amps and tele'a just fits so well.
If you have not tried a LP and an antidote give it a shot, it kills!

Tough question, and a lot depends on what kind of music - and guitars - the Z28 user plays.
Actually, I bought a new Gibson CS336 in 2010, looked around at amps (even though I had a Mesa and two BF Fenders) and bought my 28 specifically for the 336. Although It works well with everything, I use it for clean/near clean playing with the 336, and it lets me get a nice thick sound. It also works well with my archtops dialed in clean.
Still, it's hard to say, because all of my instruments sound good through it. In fact, I'm doing a clinic tomorrow morning at a school and am taking my Guild BluesBird, Strat, Tele, Heritage Archtop, a small effects board and one amp, my z28.

I like my tele jr with P90s best with the z-28, 2nd is the SG with antiquities. Haven't really played my single coil guitars in a while actually, just going through a phase.

I like everything through the Z-28. Been gigging with it for a while again. P-90s, Buckers, and single coils...
But I gotta say that my TeleMaster tones really grab me with the Z-28... but so does my Reverend with P90s and my ES 335.
I use an older KoT for more drive.

Hard choice but if I had to pick one, probably my R6. Second place to my 63 Jazzmaster.

Which one of my kids did I love the most when they were living at home? Same type of question here, but, if I had to go with one it would be my PRS McCarty loaded with Amalfitano humbuckers - which split to single coil. I can get "reasonably close" Tele or Strat sounds and still have my humbuckers.

I think what it is to MY ear, is that since the treble and bass controls increase gain after 12 o'clock, to get full on Z28 crunch, the bass has to be way up there at like 2-3. Which with some humbuckers(especially neck buckers) can get a bit woofy sounding. Single coils don't seem to have this going on. Anyone else think along a similar line?

I've found I like the 12AX7 more for a bit more girth to the breakup for my ears. That makes all my single coils sing through it and I can go from clean to mean with humbuckers fairly easily. The thing I love about the '28 is it allows each guitar's character to shine without coloring the guitar's inherent sound. Here's a quick sample of a rhythm sound and lead sound all with the same guitar. All I did was set up a mic and record the rhythm tracks, one a skanky chank the other a harmonic chime, and then overdub the two solo takes using their respective pickups. I didn't step on a stomp or add anything else to the amp. This is just the straight shot from the speaker to the mic. Dig it: Z28 & Guitar

I have one of each guitars (Strat/ Tele/ Les Paul and more) that I've collected throughout the years...all US made. Each one of these guitars sounds unique through the Z-28. I adjust the settings slightly between single coil guitars and my Les Paul. Usually straight up on single coil guitars with the treble at 1 o'clock. With my Les Paul I turn the volume down a few notches. I'm not the only one who mentions how good this amp sounds. For additional OD I use a Maxxon OD9 and a basic Electro-Harmonix reverb pedal.
It was mentioned before and I agree...this amp allows each nuance of your guitar to shine through. I bought a new 100w Fender Mustang III for my son to play with but he keeps wanting to use my amp. A good modelling amp is not bad but the old saying holds true...jack of all trades and master of none.
Next I believe it's time for another Dr Z amp...any recommendations for a Dr Z amp that sounds like an Vox AC30??

I play three guitars thru mine, one at a time :} The American stat with lace golds is sweet. I have an old Guild Starfire with weak humbuckers and the Z28 lets it sound like it should, doesn't take over or color the tone. The other is a Epi Blues Zephyr, Korean made, still trying to dial that one in. Seems like the Z28 loves P-90s as well. I say single coils, stats, teles are the best match for the Z28, but if anyone wants to send me a vintage LP I'll A-B it for a couple years (just to be thorough) and let you know.

My Retro Classic S (Strat) is my go to Z28 tone machine. Also, TV Jones toaster pups sound incredible too! And humbuckers! Okay... I'm not adding anything here lol. The Z28 rules...
