I have heard some yays and some nays.Is the fang really all that "bad" in this?...I had 1/10 ghia and my teles and it couldn't work it out.
Wondered if someones had both and the 28's a whole different animal since you can dial pretty much any tone preference.

I converted my Z28 head to a 1x10 combo a couple of years ago, and it has the stock Eminence Ramrod in it. People here have previously opined on the 10" Red Fang in a 28 combo, and the thoughts were all over the place. I haven't tried it with mine, but have heard it w/ a 28, and it seemed a little harsh to me (but everybody hears differently).
I always try to remember that there's a reason that Doc pairs certain speakers with certain amps or cabinets, and so far, I pretty much agree with him.

Strictly my opinion... The Z-28 and 10" Red Fang. I like a new 10" Red Fang before broken in... it sounded nice with all my guitars. BUT to me as the speaker broke in, it became darker... more than I like. I gravitate to P90s. It was the same to me with humbucker guitars. Just my personal experience with a Z-28 with a 10" Red Fang.
On the other hand, if you're going with Strats and Teles plugged into it, it may be right for you. One thing I do love about the 10" Red Fang, it's a loud little speaker and moves more air than you think. Got one in a 1x10 Ghia and a 1x10 M12.

I had a 1x10 w a Gold inside and my Z28. It was good but I prefer my 1x12 more.

yeah im thinking the same thing....I really loved that little ghias ultra portability.Still has me ? (thinkin)
but a 12 is smoother and rounder on the top and bottem to ears...need some thump...

Yes, every now and then when I take my 28 1x10 combo out, I'll also take a 1x12 Mesa cabinet w/ a C90, or even a 2x12 cab with Vin30s. What I lose in portability is more than made up for; no question about it, the 12s sound nice.

The Doc's 1x10 cabs are pretty special - biggest 1x10 I've ever played.
I never liked the Red Fang with my Z28 (it was great with the Ghia). It was too mid heavy and just got worse as it broke in. I couldn't get any highs at all, and although it pushed plenty of volume out, it never cut through the mix for me. I changed for a Weber Blue Pup Ceramic and it sounds great.

Of all the speaker cabs to match up with a Z-28 .... I have not yet had the opportunity to run with a 110 ...... prolly explains my fixation/fascination with the 210 and 112 stack .... and don't get me started about the Z-best and other cab/speaker configs .... and why I favor multi-speakers with Z-28
All that said, I'd be inclined to agree with a coupla points above - if the good Doc himself figured a 110 speaker matched well with a Z-28 .... then that would prolly be the one I'd be inclined to start with Always interested to see/hear what other folks are doin' with their Z-28 cheers always, eh Joel

Still rocking the Z 10" in my 210 combo. Cant see anything being THAT much better to justify the costs. I'm sure golds and blues probably are, but $400 better?

Tried my Z-28 as a 1x10 w/ Red Fang and didn't like it. Too much mid honk, as Pete says, with an amp that's already very mid-focused. I actually like the G12H30 with the Z-28 about as well as any speaker I've tried--the G12H's slight mid-scoop balances the '28's mid-emphasis very nicely.

I had a 1x10 with the stock ramrod and really liked it with the z-28. Better than the ghia. I needed pedals more than the extra cab though so I sold it. Would buy again

I have been using my z28 in a. 1 10 combo or with a 1. 10 ext cab. Both with red fangs.....they sound great to me ! I crank them AT a huge Church gig ! Sound man hates me ! Doesn't even put it in the mix ! The Pastor suggested I bring a second amp ! Haha. Holy sound wars. ! But that configuration sounds great to me.....not as huge sounding as the EZGs, but nice for smaller stuff

If you dont go for the red fang a 10" green back matches up with Z28 very nicely.
