I had my Z28 in 2 years ago for a bias/retubing. I bought a matched quad of 6V6s, Tung Sol RI's. So, I played the first 2 tubes for a year, noticed them sounding a little weaker(I crank the amp, 3-3-3 baby!), swapped that set for the other two and I've played them for the last year. Again, I noticed these getting weaker. So, to see if the first 2 had more life left in them than the current set, I put the old ones back in. Now, they worked fine when I pulled them a year ago. No sound, and I noticed a slight electrical burning smell. Crap! So I turn it off, unplug, drain the caps, check the fuse(its fine) and pull the old used tubes, put the currently being used ones back in, carefully fire it back up, let it warm up, crank it and play. No Issues, no smell, no difference in tone or performance.
WTF??? Could I have burnt something up? Either way, what do you think? Its working fine again.

Try a new set of output tubes with good specs. You'll know right away if the old set is weak. You've had them in there for a year. If you play once a day every day for a year you'll put some hours on a set. Try a new phase inverter at the same time too.

Yeah, I get that. But what would you all think was up with the no sound/electrical smell after having done nothing other than putting in tubes that worked fine a year ago but have set in my guitar toolbox for a year? I'm worried something got cooked.

You could take a look and see if anything looks burned.

I burned a capacitor in my z-28 last year and it smelled like burning. You should probably have a tech look at the amp and test the tubes.
