I have a king of tone... it has three options for the two switches... boost, overdrive and more overdrive. It is very versatile. It's always on my board, but I also have another boost and another overdrive... the KOT is more compressed tone than my Klone, Timmy, Zen or TS (all of which rotate through). Hope that helps.

Thanks for the info. Think I may try one out. Just have to figure out which version. Seems to be 4 versions??

I think Mike P (analogman) currently is producing version 4. His numbering reflects, I believe, the evolution of the design, not different available versions. However, he does offer options for how v4 is configured.
I've had the pedal for several years. It's a good one, although currently off the gigging board. Very flexible.

you can only buy version 4 new now. There are a couple different options like high gain on either or both sides, and 4 jacks to put one at the front and one at the end of the chain.
It really does sound great with a ghia, and I loved it with a strat. My SG sounded real good in boost mode through an overdriven ghia too.
If you can get one at a reasonable price id go for it, but I wouldn't spend $400 for one on eBay.

I run a v4 KoT with the high gain Red side. It's my fave OD pedal by far. It's not really a clean boost, so both sides impart their own flavor. But, it's a really good flavor.

V4's are great and it looks like they've gotten much cheaper since I spent a year on a waiting list to get one... YOU can swap out the two side to any of three levels with dip switches or toggles... boost/overdrive/distortion...
only a few options:
Optional HIGHER GAIN $10 per side Optional external toggle jack $50 Optional 4 jack version $50
Otherwise the all the same basic pedal.

When y'all talk about high gain, can you compare that to anything else? Im not looking for a muddy tone. I did finally read about version 4 today from their website. It is pricey. But Id love to have 2 drives on my board and that's it.

But Id love to have 2 drives on my board and that's it. It's really not any more gain than a standard tube screamer, even with the high gain option. He has some really good audio and YouTube clips on the website. It's kinda like a more transparent tubescreamer, but not as transparent as a Timmy. I sold mine because I couldn't get it to have enough boost and saturation with both sides on for a solo, and now I use an OCD always on into a Timmy for solos which works better for my band. It all depends on what you're looking for and in some situations the KOT is a great fit.

Got on the list in May of last year. Did not want to pay Ebay prices I can wait! I am really excited to try it in place of my Keeley 808 that I run into my TIM. Hoping it fits the bill so I can have the real estate. I am going to go with the high gain on one side.

When I have run a KoT into a Ghia, the way it worked best for me was to run the yellow (low gain, or 'clean(ish) boost) channel to gain it up just enough to give a little more 'apparent' headroom, then set the amp volume accordingly for the room (and the drums and bass)then ride the guitar volume for solos. This was a borrowed Ghia and I believe the speaker was a 25watt Greenback, which was a little 'mushy' for me, but it all worked out w/ the KoT. This one is w/ Richeray's old tele, an earlier version KoT on the yellow channel and a 2X10 cab if I'm not mistaken

I just got a KoT over on TGP specifically for my 25th Ghia. I absolutely love it. (See this thread for details and other suggestions ztalk.proboards.com/thread/59977/od-boost-using-overdriven-ghiaSomeone suggested in that thread to run the ghia wide open on the volume. I've been running like this for the past few weeks (volume wide open, MV 9:00). I use the KoT to push it just a bit more for certain songs. For example, I use the yellow side (od) for Foo Fighters, and the red side for STP, etc. Sound is very transparent, red side (I have the high gain red side) is more compressed but I like that for the songs which I use it. It is not an 'always on' pedal for me. All my tone comes straight from the ghia with the exception of a just a tad (and I mean very light) reverb (Stereo Wet Mono).

There are some gigs where I have to run my ghia at about 10 o'clock (no MV on mine) with P90's... and I use a klone or the yellow boost portion of the KOT always on... then the overdrive for solos. It's not gonna get you Carlos tones in that configuration (like an OCD)... but I don't do that much and have a Zen/Timmy if I need that.

I think I've "tried" the KOT about 4 different times. Started several years ago when I would get on the list, get a KOT, then get on the list again. By the time my name would come up the next time, I would have sold it already. Then the hype would hit me, I'd have a different amp and wonder how it would sound through whatever that current setup would be. I always felt that since almost everyone talks about how it is one of the best ODs, that maybe the previous one was a bad one, or maybe I wasn't using it right. I even tried a POT when they came out. They just never seemed to jive for me no matter how much I wanted them to. I felt that the sounds I would get out of the KOT were quite a bit thin or flat to me. Every time I would get another one, plug in and play after receiving it, I would immediately remember why I got rid of it. I found I liked the FDII a bit better, and a Tim or Timmy the best for the sounds I was hearing in my head, with the fullness that I felt I was missing out of the KOT. But then again, I never had a Ghia and a KOT at the same time. Reality says I still won't be happy with it, but the gear junkie inside has been thinking about getting back on that list for some time now...

I hardly ever use my Ghia live, as I prefer my Maz Sr. However, I've used it extensively in the studio, and mostly with my KOT, which has the high gain mod on the red side. Too much and it's too compressed, but I got some great results with the Ghia volume about 1/3 up, Airbrake on one click, and either the red side of the KOT set with the gain about 3/4 up and volume 2/3, or with the yellow side set for a cleaner and more transparent slight boost with just a bit of hair on the gain. Sometimes I've used a Klone after the KOT too, just for a bit more boost in the solos. It's a great combination. The KOT has been my go-to pedal for several years now, replacing my Xotic BB/RC, and I use it on every gig with my Maz.

I have a very early KoT... I think #56 and a much later one. I use it as a boost and have the options set for minimal gain. MY yellow side for more jangle and the red side for a driving boost. Love it with all my Z-Amps.
The newer one seems to have more gain and I sometimes plug that one in too depending on the situation.

I have been looking and found a couple, but they were asking more than Analogman's price for a new pedal. I'll wait ... Unless a great deal shows up.

I got on the list last May thinking I can't loose because I'll just sell it if it's not that great. Mine came In January and nope not selling it….. it is "that" great. I got the higher gain on the red side. I use the yellow side as more of a clean boost/very light drive. It defiantly wouldn't hurt anything to get both sides with the higher gain though.
