Turned on the Ghia the other night and my tone was not there. Thin sounding, breaking up earlier than usual and not a good sounding breakup. When I had one of the preamp tubes go out before, the amp just stopped working. I have never had the power amp tubes go out in the Ghia (I replace them once a year just to avoid them dying at my weekly gig). Not sure what the rectifier would do if it was dying. That would require me looking up what a rectifier does. : ) Does anyone know what the cause of this might be? I can start the process-of-elimination on tubes with old ones I have that still work, but if anyone can offer any insight I'd appreciate it! My guess would be to start with the power amp tubes. I suppose it could be unrelated to the tubes as well. But I doubt it...

Rec tubes supply power to the amp. (They turn the electricity from the wall, into something the amp can use.) Basically, rec tubes either work or they don't. There's no middle ground.
You should have a spare set of power tubes (if not all tubes) as backup.
I would start with the power tubes.

Here's a question. I noticed as I was shopping around for tubes online that there were different numbers on tubes of the same make and type. Specifically the Electro Harmonix EL84's. Some sites had photos of the tube with the numbers 03 02, others had 02 02 and others still, had 06 08. The pictures I came across were from the tube depot, the tube store, and ehx.com, respectively.

HAs anyone tried the Mullard re-issue tubes? Are they good tubes?

The Mullard RI 12AX7's are my favorites. I've gone to them in all my amps although I have NOS ones here too. I need reliability and good sound. I got tired of Microphonic NOS tubes.... especially in my Fenderamps with reverb... which seem to be more sensitive. I love the JJ EL84's though.
