Hi all,i might have the opportunity to buy back my ghia head and 2x10 cab(swapped it for a maz, loved the maz but always missed the ghia) I put a 12" greenback in my maz which allowed me to get more drive with less volume with my strat. So I'm thinking I could put a pair of 10" greenbacks in the 2x10 to get that lovely ghia overdrive without killing everyone at the gig.My question is this? Is the greenback a good choice for the ghia?Cheers llew.

I've used the 10" Greenies..I thought they sounded great! I parted with mine for the opposite reason...I needed MORE headroom and clarity, but I think that would be an excellent choice for you if you're looking to reduce your volume a bit.

I like the ghia thru a greenback. I only have experience with the 1x12 greenback. Because greenback speakers have a low sensitivity rating 95db for the 10" greenback it will lower the volume of your ghia. Dr Z 10's have a higher sensitivity rating but I don't know the numbers. You will loose headroom and volume but you'll be able to drive the ghia harder for the ghia goodness. Its a personal choice, my ghia with a greenback struggled keeping up with a loud band but I put the V30 back in and it roared and kept up, no problem.

Yeah I think the greenbacks are the way to go as I can't play loud at most of the local gigs.I like to use my guitars volume to go from clean to dirty to lead so I think it should work.Hopefully be able to buy it back now.

As stated above, the 10" greenbacks are 95db....considerably quieter than the 12" greenbacks at 98db.
Those 10" greenback will be considerably quieter than the stock 10's that came with the amp.

Anyone tried the celestion anniversary gold? The 12" gold is a LOUD speaker. (100db) If you're concerned about volume, this might not be a good choice. It will sound great, but it will be louder. I have a single 10" gold in my ghia combo. It's fantastic for what I want it to do. It's 98db....so it's in the middle of the pack.

A pair of 10" greenbacks is my go to combination at the moment. Sound great with everything I have tried them with including a ghia. Now if you are going for bright twangy chime, maybe not the ticket. Looking for that rock and roll vibe, they are the ticket. Actually thinking about baffling down a 212 cab so I can run one 12 and one 10 greenback just to see what it will do.

So maybe this is a dumb question. I have a 2 x 10 cab with Z speakers. If I traded one of them out for a 10" Greenback but kept the other Z...is that going to give me a mix of overdriven and clean? Or if I wanted clean I could mic the Z and for overdrive close mic the Greenback? Anyone ever done this? Should a pair of speakers match more closely in db? Just beginning to think about experimenting. I like my tone with the 2 x 10 as is but it's a bit loud and I would also enjoy getting a bit more OD naturally without pedals. Greenbacks sound like the ticket. Any thoughts?

Greenbacks sound like the ticket. Any thoughts? A lower efficiency speaker isn't going to give you more 'overdrive'. Two things will happen: 1) A lower volume speaker will allow you to push the amp harder (volume knob up higher)....that's where the greater overdrive will come from. 2) A lower volume and wattage speaker will have more breakup. But this breakup is a different beast than overdrive. Breakup is the speaker struggling to accurately reproduce the tone it's supposed to, because it's starting to be pushed beyond it's capability. That can be a cool thing or not....depending on what you're looking for. If you want super crystal clean, it will be perceived as overdrive/distortion. In other cases, it can add that extra bit of tone. So if you replace one speaker, it will not be a case of clean and overdrive. Not like using a pedal type overdrive. Yes, the greenback will reach it's limits earlier and start to breakup...but nothing like stepping on an overdrive pedal.

Sure, I understand that it will be different than a pedal. I'm wondering if it will sound weird if one speaker is breaking up and one is not. Should they be matched closely in volume? Would a greenback and a Z 10" work well together? Do I have to replace both Z's, in other words? I like to use the Voodoo Labs Sparkle Drive pedal because it has a blend knob with the clean amp and the tube screamer side mixable. I like that aspect and was wondering if the speaker combo of a greenback and a Z would offer some of the same concept or if it would be locking me into a weird sound of partial breakup, partial clean.

The stock Z speaker is louder (for a given amp setting). So the Z speaker will be the dominate tone, but that's not to say the greenback won't add it's own flavor....just less effective at doing it. And no, it won't be strange to have one speaker that breaks up early, and one that doesn't. In fact, a lot of people like it.

Makes sense. Thanks! One last question...I have the stock Z speakers but it does not say (that I can see) on them what their impedance is. Are they 16 ohm speakers in parallel to produce 8 ohms of resistance (the back of my cab has an 8 ohm label on it from Z)? Is there a norm on Z speaker cabs, or do I need to do some more investigating about the wiring? The wire coming in from the back is black and white...and only goes to one speaker, with a new set of black and white wires connecting the two speakers. Do I need to check terminals to see series or parallel? Sorry, new to the world of after-market changes!

The z 10s are 16 ohm. So to use the 8 ohm tap you need to get a 16 ohm greenback. You could mix the 16 ohm with a 8 ohm greenback which would give you 5.33 ohm load and then you would have to use a 4 ohm tap. That may actually balance the two speakers more as the 16 ohm z would be getting less of the power than the 8 greenback. If your ghia doesn't have a 4 ohm tap that won't work.

My Ghia does have a 4 ohm tap. Any risk involved not matching those up exactly as designed? Thanks for the info already!

The rule of thumb is you can put a higher impedance speaker/cab into a lower tap without any problem. Just don't do it the other way around.

I love the Greenback 12. One of my favorite speakers. i spent the big bucks on two 10" greenbacks a while back. YUCK! some of the worst speakers I ever heard. Tried breakng them in to no avail.(although my 12 greenbacks sounded good right out of the box) Totally differnt speaker than the 12" if that's what you are seeking. Lifeless, no good voicing,no character at all. JMHO What's even wierder is I put two JensenRI Mod1050's I had laying around in (total cost $80!) and the amp came alive big time....
