Do people prefer one or the other with the Ghia? I'm using a homemade open back 2x12 with Scumback M75 65 watters. I don't really feel like I'm missing anything that the closed back would provide but I might like to try it. Do you think I would get more from the Greenback style speakers with it? Would probably get some more low end. Really wondering if it's worth buying some birch ply and ripping a back panel in the wood shop...

I prefer the open back, but if your playing requirements call for something more directional, then a closed back would perhaps be a better choice.

I have been into closed backs lately. I like the tight response, also helps the others tolerate me at practice!

It depends on the tone you're going for, and the circumstances of your playing.
Open backs have sound that comes out the back, so when you're playing a gig, the sound bounces off the wall behind you and fills up the stage. Closed backs just shove the sound forward. They are much more directional cabinets. Both have their advantages and disadvantages.
Open backs have less bass and more mids. (due to phase cancelling of the bass tones out the back of the cabinet.) Closed backs are known for attenuated/rolled off highs and more bass...recessed mids.
There is no right or wrong.
For playing strats/teles, I usually prefer open backs. But if I'm playing humbuckers and going for that Marshall tone....GOTTA have a closed back.

I have 2 of Z's convertable cabs, a 1x12 and 2x10. I stack one on top of the other (10 on top of the 12). I keep the 10 closed, and the 12 open (center panel). I've not tried the opposite configuration, though.

I agree with everyone here, good points. I've gigged the Ghia with open and closed back cabs. I like them both but it depends on what type of music/sound you're after. I've not gigged the ghia with a 2x12 open back Z cab. I use an oversized 1x12 similar to a THD design with a small'ish opening in the back. The ghia sounds big and full with lots of chime. I really like the ghia and a stock Z Best 2x12 cab. Big full low end and it cuts like a knife. Like all closed back cabs it's directional but it can fill a room with ghia goodness.
