Just curious if anyone has any input into the different tone, feel, and response of a Ghia into 2 x 10's versus 1 x 12.

FWIW I play country and use Teles about 99% of the time. Just wondering if a 2 x 10 speaker config might be better in this situation.

Hey badbob - Country and a Tele? 1X12 with a Celestion Blue would do it nicely. 2x10's would work too but the Alnico speaker will have that twangy 'pop'.

the 2 10's are loud and I like how they are very round. I tried the other day a vintage 1x15 and it was to extreme on the low strings and you couldnt hear much of the higher strings.

You might even consider a 1x10 cab. Save the back and enjoy the balanced tones of the 10.

Badbob, There's something magical about the ghia and how it interacts with the blue. The 2x10's are Dr Z 10s which are efficient (loud) and immediate (ceramic thud factor). The blues tend to break up earlier and are softer attack with swirling mids and highs aka gooey goodness. The blue is also an efficient speaker (loud) but will not have as much bottom and immediate thud factor as the 10s. Just depends on what you like to hear. If you want strong bold bottom end go with the 10's. If your preference is mid and high gooey goodness go with the blue. And something else to consider, the ghia reacts differently to tube and speaker changes and generally it's easier to swap out 1x12 than 2x10s. I would say that there are more choices in 12s but these days there are a lot of great choices for 10s.

My two cents concerning 10's if you're leaning that way....the Celestion G10 Vintage's and the Greenback 10's sound great. The 10" Gold is also a nice choice (pricey). Drew's description of Doc's 10's is spot-on, but if you're wanting to soften it up a bit... I'm currently running a Gold and a Vintage together in my 2X10 cab and they work well together...the Vintage tightens up the low end a bit, and the Gold has the sweet mid and high end going on.

Thanks for the info guys. I went back and forth but finally just pulled the trigger on a new Carmen Ghia 1 x 12 combo from Humbucker Music.
In general I prefer 2 - 10's to move more air on stage, but then again those are all old Fender 6L6 amps I'm using too. I like that speaker config to tame the bass and give a little more mid kick. Thinking about it, I don't really have any 1 -12 combos so I figured I might as well get the Ghia in that config.
Everyone seems to rave about the CG/Celestion Blue combination. I'm really anxious to try that.
Thanks for all the info, much appreciated!
take care, Robbie

You're a lucky dude Robbie. One thing to keep in mind, which you may already know, any speaker has a break in period. I've found that Celestion Blues will be bright and not that warm right out of the box but they will warm up nicely once broken in and just continue to get better with time. Just don't want you to get your new Ghia and be disappointed. Dr Z Amps react differently (in a good way) to speaker, tube and touch changes. All will make a difference. You can have hours of fun playing with different tubes V1 and V1 in the Ghia. Or speaker and power & rectifier tube changes. Enjoy and give yourself some time to play with the different settings. For only two knobs there's a lot of versatility in the ghia.

Yeah, I had a Carmen Ghia head in my possesion briefly. I did the V1/V2 swap (5751 in preamp, 12AX7 in PI)and found that REALLY worked well for me.
The one I ordered has the stock Vintage 30. I've always wanted an amp experiment with various 12" Celestion speakers so this will work out perfect.
I love Greenbacks but not sure how they do in a 1 x 12 open back combo. I gig a lot and get lots of last minute fill in gigs.....so I need an amp that can "bring the business" when needed. So I need a loud efficient speaker in smaller lower wattage combos.
I'm excited about getting the CG and gigging with it. I think it's going to work very well for me.

Spend some time with that stock V30. I was skeptical when I first got my Ghia combo. It requires some break in time, but it's back in my Ghia. I tried probably 6 different speakers, and after all of that I've got a nicely broken in V30 in there. It sounds great on stage. There are probably speakers that sound better in a small room/home application, but the V30 really works great in the mix.

Yeah, what sounds great in your bedroom doesn't always sound good on stage and vice versa. I do plan to give the V30 some break in time and a few gigs before I try something else.
I definitely need loud and punchy and I do know the V30 is great for that.
