Don't 6V6s sound a little fuller than EL84s? Maybe not quite as chimey? Help me out here. I'm thinking of trading. (Though I love the M12) Thanks, Brian

I've always felt like EL84s are "chimier," whereas 6v6s are fatter and have more overall punch; I prefer the latter (a la Z28), but think that my Rati v2 (EL84x4) is a true monster for rock and blues, plus it has a tone control that I consider to be a work of art.

The EL84's are chimier and the M12 is thinner sounding. That EF86 front end dominates who the amp sounds, but across the R66, Z28, and M12 you can tell how the power amp impacts overall tone (as well as volume obviously). Between the Z28 and the R66, very little difference in the circuit (I did not look that closely at the M12). And of course in Dr Z amps, the transformers are a huge influence. I had both. Still have the Z28.

The Doc gets some serious girth from his 6V6 amps - that's what drew me to the Z28 and then the Remedy

The Z-28, to me, is smoother and packs more punch, partially due to more power of course. The M12 is a little crisper sounding. As you know, the M12 is designed to offer plenty of clean headroom as a pedal platform. The '28 is great with pedals, but it gets its own OD going lower down on the Volume knob than the M12. Another way to say it is the Z-28 leans toward the tweed Fender/early Marshall type sounds and the M12 has a bit of Vox -- that chime thing -- going. Imo, fwiw
