Due to circumstances I would rather not get into at this point I am down to one amp (Z-28) one cab Z 1X12 convertable and two electric guitars, Grosh strat style and a Crook Les Caster!
I have to Praise this amp, Holy crap the Z-28 can do fender cleans and marshall dirt with nothing more than a little knob tweeking. And thats all I can afford and I'm finding out thats all I need..... Thanks Mr. Zaite

Agreed! I've said it here before - I've owned a Mazerati, a Maz Jr, a Maz Sr, a Stang Ray, and a Z28. If I had started with the Z28 there's a good chance I might not have owned any of those other amps.
But that Stang Ray *was* pretty amazing... ;-)

I'm with you Dave!
I've owned several Z amps ( Z Wreck, Remedy, Antidote, RXES, Route 66, Maz Jr NR, Ghia, 25th Ghia) and my Z28 is by far my fav.
I have more than one amp, but I could be happy with just the Z28. Simplistic magic!

Got that right man! I especially like the hidden Marshall dirt with a greenback. It's not all fendery cleans when you turn those knobs to the right

My Z28 was my sole amp for two years. Still is my #1 go to amp. With guitar/pickup choice and my one OD pedal, it can do just about everything.
But I did score a backup a month ago that'll work in a pinch. Its a 1990's Roland Blues Cube BC-30. Got it off Craigslist for $25!!! Was beat to hell, holes in the speaker, shredded grillcloth, dirty, and the guy HANDED me the input jack. I soldered that back in, replaced the grillcloth, cleaned it up, put a broken in Weber California speaker in it(H dome one), got new jack nuts and a footswitch. I'm into it about $150 with grillcloth to spare and I gotta say, as a Z owner and tube amp guy for the past 20+ years, IT DOES NOT SUCK! It actually sounds legitimately decent, enough so that I would gig it. It cant touch the Z28, but for jams and practices and get togethers where I don't want to lug the Z28 around or leave it(which is ANYWHERE, EVER), it sounds plenty good, is plenty loud(with that speaker), has enough headroom(again, with that speaker, but barely) and I don't worry about it. I'm serious, it sounds good enough that if my Z ever took a dump, I wouldn't be totally screwed.

One of the few Z amps I've yet to try. They had one where I went to try out a Maz 18, but using 6VS's in Deluxe Reverbs for so long, I wanted to something different. Might have been a mistake.

Last year I gave my son my Maz 18 NR head in trade for my old Laney VC 30 combo. Well, he wants the combo back so in two weeks I will remember why I bought it. But as I recall I had no 2nd thoughts about letting him have it over the Z28. Between the Z28 for almost ANY gig I do, or the Remedy when an outdoor un-mic'd venue pops up, I am fully covered and pleased with what the Dr. has created. The cleans, the grit, and the response to pick attack (or finger attack) with either single coil or humbuckers. And it loves any pedal I put in front of it. Here is a video of Marty Stuart speaking of his tone with his Princeton - I feel the same way with my Z28.

When I bought my Maz Jr ten years ago I debated the Z28. The store did not have one to try as I recall, so I went for what I perceived to be the more versatile of the two. All this talk makes me want to seek a Z28. It's Thanksgiving, so I'm just going to be thankful for my family, my good fortune, and what I've got. Maybe one day I'll get to try one.

Ahem, I think I might go so far as to say that I like the Z-28 .... with a 210 Z cab with a 112 Z cab sometimes with both a 112 and 210 cab with a Z-best and ..... I even done tried it with a 210 and the Z-best together - aint sure the neighbours enjoyed it as much as I did ..... I may be preachin' to the choir, but this lil' amp will go from clean to mean and many, many, many places in-between Guitar - patch cord - amp into cabinet(s) .... dialin' in great tones no problem imho
Now, never mind the type of guitar/pickups - I've enjoyed Strats, Teles, Jaguars, LPs, SGs, ES and even PRS .... and, don't get me started on how well it handles pedals (especially a Flying Dragon and a DRACONIS) I guess you might say that I LIKE the Z-28 ...... just a lil' bit ....... cheers always, eh Joel

I own 3 amps however the Z28 is my favourite gigging amp.
Perfect cleans and roars into life with a RAT in front of it.
I run it through a Dr. Z 4x10 and it just cuts through perfectly.
I originally bought the amp and cab more or less to sell on. A guy I know was selling it cheap and I thought it might be an o.k. investment. I got it home, plugged it in and proceeded to play just straight into the amp for a couple of hours. After that I forgot all about selling it.
I had never played or heard a Dr. Z before but now I am fairly hooked. I'd love a Z Wreck one day but living in Australia makes the cost of getting these amps in rather prohibitive.
I play a CIJ Fender Telecaster 52 RI into it and have never heard it sound better in a live situation.
Nothing but praise for the good Doctor.
I'd love to hear it through a 4x12 however that would involve getting a new cab as my 4x12 is 16ohm. Still, I'll get around to that someday.

Maybe rewire your cab to 4 ohms?

Or just run from the 8 ohm output on the amp to the 16 ohm input to the cab .... should be a workable situation iirc
cheers always,

You can plug a 16ohm cab into the 8ohm output jack without any problem. Give it a try. Some folks like the mismatch. More ohms than the output not a problem. Less can be.

Mesa has good explanations of matches, good mismatches and bad ones in the owner manuals of some of its amps. Go to their website, find manuals and look for this in the back pages of the manual.

I just tried it through my Hiwatt SE4129 4x12 running out of the 8ohm tap. It sounded huge!
As my Hiwatt DR103 can run at 4ohm I think I may rewire the cab today for 4ohm total and then I have the choice of using the Z28 with the 4x12 or my Hiwatt with the Dr. Z 4x10.
I was really impressed with the Z28 through the Fanes. It just sounded so deeper and clearer in a way.

^^^ good to hear ... as I've said in the past, and still say today, the '28 is best with multiple speakers - in the past for me that meant 112 + 210 cabs .... in the future, I hope it means 210 + 212 cabs .... cheers always, Joel p.s. yes, I am probably posting more in the Z-28 section as of late - it's taken me a while, but I got mine back

I love my Z-28 also! Once owned a Maz Jr. Loved it too. Then it was the Z-Wreck. Loved it but couldn't justify having to attenuate it down. It was too loud for my situation. It was my favorite all time sound for an amp, but the Z-28 is perfect for me and plenty loud and well pleased with the sound. Still wouldn't mind having a Z-Wreck combo when they come out, but can't afford it right now.
