Me: EH EF86, NOS GE 5751, RI Tungsol 6V6s, Sovtek 5AR4
I had a NOS Tesla EF806S but it went microphonic. I am considering either a Winged C, or a RI Tungsol EF806S gold Pin.
What is the next step up from the RI Tungsol 6V6s? JAN Phillips?

GE grey plate 6V6's, Dario EF86, Mullard 5AR4 and a GE 5751.
The stock JJ 6V6's sounded great, but too LOUD!! All the other tubes sound about like the ones that Doc put in, but it's nice knowing that old glass is in there.
Love this amp!

I have RI Tungsol 6V6's as well. Using a RI TungSol 12AX7 in the PI. A Sovtek 5AR4. My EF86 is a NOS GEC. When I got the amp off eBay it had the GEC in there. Now that I know how much those run, I'm running that puppy into the ground. lol. It sounds awesome though. I do have a couple NOS Amperex BugleBoy EF86's as well though (as back ups). Trying to pick up a few NOS EF86's as I go along.
I agree with Mark. I love the Z28. By far the best amp I have ever owned!

Almost stock, I only changed the PI(V2) to a 5751. I think it makes the amp a little brighter and sweeter. V1: NOS EF86, V2: Phillips JAN 5751, V3/4: JJ 6V6 (matched pair), V5: Sovtek 5AR4

Hmm.. interesting. I gotta go look in mine--I always assumed there was a 12AX7 in the PI, but I just looked at Doc's webpage and sure enough it shows "5751/12AX7". Can anyone describe how the different tubes in that spot would act?
Also, if I'm not mistaken, I believe the amp was designed around the GT-6V6R (aka. E-H 6V6EH). Surprised to see so few people using them... including mine, which actually has JJ's.

I feel the 5751 gives a warmer less gainy breakup to the '28. The 12AX7 sounds like the amp has more balls and has more of a rock tone to my ears. Tone is subjective though so my opinion is just that-an opinion. I like th 5751 b/c I also get more headroom overall for times when I want a cleaner foundation from the '28. The 12AX7 gives up the goods quicker and takes you to that sweet breakup threshold faster. Both work well in the amp. AFA tubes go I've had bad experiences with the JJ recto and preamp tubes and thought their 6V6 sounds more like a 6L6 in the amp. There's nothing wrong with that sound but I prefer the sound of the other 6v6s I've used: NOS RCAs (currently), the TS reissues (great sound and price), and both Mesa labeled and EH labeled ones. YMMV.

I agree that the JJ 6V6s sounded more like 6L6s. Not necessarily a bad thing. They were noticeably louder and a little crunchier than the Tungsol RI 6V6s I'm running now. My problem with them was, in my combo even with dampers, they rattled. The Tungsols don't.
That's what worries me about experimenting with NOS power tubes. I hate tube rattle. If I pay big money for them, and they rattle, that sucks. and you cant "know" ahead of time. Its a combo with loud Z speakers and I play it loud. If they are gonna rattle, theyre gonna rattle in my rig! Anyone know of some NOS 6V6s that DEFINITELT don't rattle? Otherwise I'll stick with the Tungsols.
And all you using Dario miniwatts.....Where do you find them? Ive been searching Ebay, and theyre all in Europe. Scares me to get one shipped from Whereverslovakia, ya know, especially for $55+ a pop. Any other sources???
