I opened up the Ghia for the first time today and found that the tubes differ from what I was expecting..
V1 - JJ ECC 83s V2 - Tung-Sol 12ax7 V3&4 - Electro-Harmonix EL 84 V5 - JJ 5Y3s
I was surprised to find no 5751 and to see EH and Tung-Sol tubes?? I assume I haven't been getting the full on Ghia tone w/o the 5751, right? I have a couple of those JJ ECC803s Gold Pins laying around, but I've heard they are pretty ballsy and that some amps have trouble pushing them.
3 quick questions... 1) Is the JJ ECC803s Gold Pin a tube the Ghia can push? 2) What is the best new production 5751 out there? 3) Are the Electro-Harmonix decent EL84's?
Planning on putting in an order to the Tube Depot.. Any help would be great!
Thanks guys!
Danny

Where are you planning to put the 5751? V1 or V2? (I would vote V2)

I've always run V1 as a 12ax7 (Think I have a NOS EI in there now), and V2 as a 5751 (NOS JAN Phillips). I'm not sure there is a new production 5751. They end up being 12ax7s that didn't meet spec. I find that preamp & rectifier tubes are worth the NOS $ premium, but I won't splurge on power tubes (especially cathode-bias EL-84s).

Out of curiosity, I looked inside my recent 25th Anniversary Ghia. There was indeed a 5751 in there, and I believe it was in the factory-intended V2 position. The brand I wasn't sure of, maybe a Philips(?), looked NOS to me. Though, if anybody buys a new Ghia and it doesn't have a 5751 (or anything NOS, for that matter) in it, I'd suspect it's due to the serious lack of quality tubes these days. Although, if it's shipping out the door with the Doc's name on the front, you'd better believe it's gonna still sound good.
drockafella80, I could at least help with your question #3: Doc's factory repair/service is using E-H EL84's these days. They're not expensive at all (quite cheap, actually) but if Doc has approved them, they must be acceptable. Of course, he probably pays close attention to how the tubes are graded, so that might play a role. Stick with a well-known, reputable vendor who specializes in guitar-amp tubes... that'll be your best bet.

Thanks fellas! She sounds great, don't get me wrong. I just didn't realize that the 12ax7 and 5751 were one in the same. I just didn't want to miss out on any signature tone. I threw that JJ 803s GP in V1 and put the Tung-Sol 12ax7 back in two. The 803 adds some low end beef at lower volumes...unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to crank her up yesterday. I've read good things about the 5751 in V1 too... These Ghia's definitely respond to different tube subtleties. Now, does anyone have a tried and true way if getting the backplate off of a head with boogering anything up?? I use two butter knifes and have had some success, but damn that thing is TIGHT!! Btw... Shame on me for not trusting the Doc's tube choices. Rookie bonehead mistake on my end!

Just had her up on 10 for about an hour.. Happy to report that I'm getting some Neil Young "Weld" album tones over here! Harsh and dirty..the way I like it!

WHEN I got my CG It had the 5751 in it and I tried a NOS 12AX7 which I have tons of, For me I liked the Faster Breakup at lower Volumes That's why I left it in, The Stock mode will allow more headroom IMO , but I want the sweetness and the gooods That's why I LOVE that lil AMP, Sounds like a Big Boy but when People hear 18 watts and 2 KNOBS They have the strangest look on their FACE

IMO, you're definitely going to want a 5751 in V2. They're kind the same as a 12AX7, but have less gain. They provide a girth to the Ghia that you just don't get with a 12AX7 in V2. NOS 5751s can be found readily from plenty of reputable online dealers for about 25 bucks.
I'm using the new reissue Tung Sol EL84s in my, they're very nice sounding.

Thanks for the heads up, Zep! Now, does anyone know a thing or 2 about attenuators? Time to do some forum surfing...thanks fellas! I recommend the Dr Z Brake Lite. Works well for me. He also makes the Air Brake which has more attenuation, but I have never used one.

Now, does anyone know a thing or 2 about attenuators? Time to do some forum surfing...thanks fellas! Lots of info over in the Brake Lite and Air Brake sections. The BL lets me run the Ghia at the settings I want for tone and then click up or down to match the venue. So now three knobs, a 50% increase All good.

The 5751 is less gain than the 12AX7. I run a 12AT7 in V2 and prefer it. About the same gain as the 5751.... and cheap as NOS.
