I recently added a Ghia to my Maz 18 NR and my Mini Z to complete the family. I really love it so far. From what I had read online, however, I was expecting it to be much dirtier than my Maz. I actually feel like the opposite is true, am I crazy? Obviously the Maz has the master volume, so if I crank the volume up I can get it pretty dirty.
My main guitar is an America Standard strat with stock pickups. With Ghia volume at noon, I really have to bang a chord hard to hear any breakup, and it's hardly any at that setting. On the Maz, I get more breakup with both volumes at noon than I do with the Ghia volume at noon.
I guess what I'm saying is my first impression of the Ghia was "wow, that sounds great, and really clean." I expected to say "wow, that sounds great, and really dirty."
Does this sound about right with single coils?

If you bought the Ghia used you might check to see if a previous owner swapped the V1 and V2 (preamp) tubes. Dr Z ships with a 12ax7 in V1 and a 5751 in V2. Some folks swap them around to get more clean headroom. Perfectly fine to do so, according to Z.

Yes, I've swapped them a couple times myself. I think I like the stock configuration best.

Is the amp absolutely brand new?...for some reason it seems that I had more head room at first but now it breaks up a little earlier.
amp isn't even year old just getting broken in?

What speakers are you running the amps through?

Not brand new, used. Running through greenbacks in all cases. I really love the tone, just a little surprised by the headroom.

1/10 it looks like?

Yes, 1x10. I actually like how it sounds through the Greenback 10 better than through the 12" Heritage GB in my Maz.

There have been some slight design variations of the Ghia over the years. In general, the older ones break up earlier....the new ones have higher headroom.
Also, turn the master of the maz all the way up for a comparison.
and you should compare with just one speaker. The 10" greenback and the heritage 12 will have different volume and breakup characteristics. Close...but still a bit different.

Thanks, yes I did try them both through the same speaker at first. I am really loving the sound, I just wanted to make sure that getting pretty clean tones at noon volume with single coils was normal.

Also depends on how hot your pickups are. My Strat has fairly low powered pickups in it. It will stay clean until around noon on the vol with my Ghia. None of my other guitars do, though, whether single coil or hums.

Depending on what sounds you prefer, rolling the tone knob more to the " post noon " side of the dial also seems to increase the grit ... as well as the low end. But mr. John said it best about comparisons between the two. The Ghia is touch sensitive and responds to your " right hand touch " - spoken like a righty - You could always put 2 12ax7's in if you want more gain.
