I've been pondering a tube swap since day one, but finally got around to it this a.m. I like a 5751 in V1 for the Ghia--it smooths out and warms up the front end a bit, and gives the amp a bit more headroom, making it more pedal friendly. The 12AX7 in this amp can be pretty fussy about which pedals it likes and which ones it doesn't--and if you blast it with too much gain it can get harsh on you. The 5751 is a lot more forgiving, so you can go with your standard pedal settings and get the tone you want/expect/love. Not saying it's what everyone should do--YMMV, as always--but for me it makes this great little amp even better.

Interesting. How would this compare to, say, switching the JJ's out with TAD STRs?

Mine doesn't have JJs stock--I didn't pull them, but I'm pretty sure they're EH. Only time I tried TADs I didn't like them much.

I just bought a set of all new tubes off of E-bay for the ghia it was actually avertised as a ghia primo set. Bobsezshop was the e-bay store. Not only was it a great deal they bought back some old tubes of mine and i got like 30.00 bucks back. Anyway I just switched the 5751 from V2 to V1 with the EC883 JJ. Much better warmer tone and it does take pedals better. This is how I will use my Ghia from now on great discovery Flea.. Thank you. I really like the warmth it brought to the mighty ghia.

To be clear, are we ending up with the 5751 in V1 and a 12AX7/ECC83 in V2? Sounds like something I'd like to try.

LT yes I just swapped v1 with v2 my set came with a 5751 and according to my ghia specs inside my 1/10 combo the 5751 goes in V2 so I just switched the two and put the 5751 in V1. put the ECC83 in V 2 I def like the tone better its not as bright sounding it really warmed it up.

I will confirm the added headroom as well. It really did warm up the front end of the amp.
Pedals sound way fatter. They sound like they are suppose too If that makes sense. I guess the only reference I can use is my remedy and they sound the same now as they do with the remedy. Before I would have to set my volumes on my pedals high with the ghia and bring the gain back on my pedals. Now with the 5751 in V1 I can basically use my pedals the same way I do with my remedy. Really nice warm fat overdrive and distortion coming through the ghia with my pedals I like it.

Using a 5751 in V1 of a Ghia, is a trick that Nashville guy's have used for years. To me it takes a bit of the rock out of the Ghia with Humbuckers, but as Rev said it is happier with pedals that way.

Adds another dimension to a great amp. Cool.

I recently put a brake lite in my combo and now think I like it better the normal way. I guess what im trying to say is like the way the amp breaks up better with the 5751 in V2. Im still experimenting going back and forth. I figure I can always just adjust my pedals. It def gets more crunch with that brake lite the normal way thats for sure. I still think I like it better with the 5751 in V1 it really warms up the amp I would say If you are just plugging straight in and getting your clean and drive from just the amp leave it alone. It really changes the brightness of the amp. It's def brighter with it stock so I can se how it would benefit humbuckers stock.
