Hey ya'll - I've been thinking of going from a 2x10 Ghia combo to a 1x10 and was wondering if anyone else has went this route and what the volume differences might be or differences in general besides the weight.
The 2x10 has Z speakers and the 1x10 would have the stock Ramrod in it.
Thanks

I think the stock 1x10 is the Red Fang...not the Ramrod.
My 1x10 came with the Red Fang. It's a REAL loud speaker. (103db) I found it too loud for my use, and I wanted the tone of a gold, so I bought a gold. (98db) I can tell the difference in both tone and volume reduction. (I wanted both changes)
Even at reduced volume, here's the best way to explain it:
If you're playing small clubs, the 1x10 Ghia is fantastic. If the stage is so small and the amps's at your feet, you may have to tilt the cabinet back in order to hear yourself. It's not because the amps's not loud enough, but rather the sound is blast past your ankles and not your ears.
For larger gigs...such as an outdoor festival stage where even drums are sent through the monitors, the 1x10 ghia may have a problem keeping up. But if that's the case, just have the sound guy pump some ghia through your monitor.
I personally use the Ghia for clubs, and if I have one of these outdoor gigs, I have the Remedy w/ 1x12 creamback as my 'big rig'.

I have a Ghia 1x10 combo with the Red Fang speaker, though I've only had it for a few weeks now, and a Z 2x10 cabinet.
I don't think the 2x10 is really any louder than the 1x10 combo. In fact, the 1x10 seems louder to me with the super-efficient Red Fang.
Some might disagree with me on this, but I think the 2x10 is possibly a bit more balanced and flexible than the 1x10. I also think it sounds better at lower volumes. I love the 1x10 combo for its portability, and when you get it cranked up it sounds amazing (and at that level, I prefer it to the 2x10). I joked about it in my recent post about my amp, but I really see it as a head with a convenient speaker attached to it. I love it!

What don't you like about the 1x10 at low volume and how would you describe "more balanced" ... I'm just not fond of the weight of the 2x10 combo, and though I realize different speakers can bring "balance" back, I'm not real sure what they sound like...John's a "gold" user and knew he liked that sound, me .... still learning I guess.

I tried the gold and its a great speaker however I prefer the Red Fang over the gold in the 1/10 ghia. It's def much louder then the gold. With the volume at about 10-11 and the tone at 11 it is the perfect platform for pedals and you have a really good clean tone. I never had the 2/10 so I can't compare it to it but I will say that compared to my 1/12 cabs that 1/10 ghia moves alot of air and sounds huge with that fang in it. If its a weight issue with you and you want to downsize to the 1/10 I really don't think you will be sacrificing any tone if you stick with the red fang in that 1/10 combo.
Just my opinion I am no expert.

I'm not great at describing tones in a way that makes sense to everyone, but I'll try. Again, this is IMHO, and everyone might not agree.
Lots of people like to describe Z amps as very "immediate" and focused, and I think the 1x10 Red Fang is that but possibly more so. I think the mids are a bit more prominent, and the highs a little less brilliant. Again, I'm not trying to say it's worse, just different. I really like it for what I use it for and wouldn't change a thing.
I think the gold is a bit more scooped in the mids and the differences I described above might be less pronounced, but I'll let John comment on that.
What style are you using your Ghia for?

It's been so long since I took the Fang out of my combo I can't really remember if it had scooped mids or not. I remember two things: 1. It was really loud 2. It had a lower midrange bump in tone. Not traditional mids like a greenback. Perhaps this low mid bump in tone is what you're referring to. The gold isn't really known for scooped mids. They're known for mids and even upper mids.

I use the Ghia for - folk/classic country, blues, and fuzzed out rock stuff....plus I love picking out clean chorded melodies....Mostly I'm aiming at lightening the load on me, and so I'll be getting an empty head to put mine in from the 2x10, and then probably selling/trading the headless 2x10 to get a used 1x10 with the Red Fang I hope....I think I like the idea of a super efficient speaker, as the louder rock music can use all the clean headroom possible. Mostly I've played smaller venues, with only a couple of outdoor festivals. I've not been gigging since I got the Ghia, but am working on a new project and hope to get back into it soon. Good description Burnsy

Just FWIW the 1/10 cabs come with the stock ramrod and can be upgraded to a red fang for 139.00 They sell new for 449.00 with the ramrod. The combo does come stock with the red fang.

Yeah I have been informed of the "stock speaker"...hoping to buy used w/Red Fang. But yes, initially I am intending on going with head cab, because I'm curious if the tubes will respond different without being beaten senseless in a combo. Also, the 1x10 can be converted later if figure when I'm ready to settle down. Seems like it would be fun to have some different cabs for different occasions.

Oh O.K Thats a great idea and makes alot of sense. Thats kind of the route I am going as well. Sorry I was confused I thought you was looking for a 1/10 combo. You def have some options with your game plan. I always liked the head/cab vs the combo as well. Its just nice to have a grab and go though. The 1/10 combo is so easy just grab it and go. I put mine on a small dolly and can even fit my pedal board and case on it.

You know ...just played another jam the other night (thurs) and had brakelite on 1 and still wasn't cutting it next to this guys noisy mesa somthin or other.I needed that extra room...with anything other than the fang I think I would be dead in the water.
I think its who you get up there with...guys with these 30=50 watt mesa boogies need to be louder than everyone else it seems.

Having an older ghia in a 1x10 and a new ghia with 2x10... both red fangs, the difference in volume (and frankly clean head room) is significant. It's partially the amp's age (different - bigger transformers I think) but also those very loud red fangs.

Having an extra speaker increases the volume by like 3dbs or something ( i think i read that somewhere around here ) ... You must be loving those red fangs...so many talk about the golds and blues and creambacks ect...around here. Did you have the 2 Z 10's to start with and switch to the Fangs? If so what were the differences?

I'm not one of those Red Fang lovers. The decision to pull mine out of the Ghia came in the first few minutes of playing the Ghia when I got it. There was something missing. So I got the 10" gold, and when I fired up the amp...I played for three seconds....literally three seconds...I stopped and said "yep, that's what I was looking for."

I had the gold in my 1/10 combo at the time and really like that tone but was kind of buried in the mix really couldn't hear myslef as well. I went back to the Fang and now have no problem getting heard at all. It is loud! Mine is an older Ghia combo too. I do like the Gold tone its def smoother. its just that the Red fang works better for me keeping up with that hammond B3 organ and that leslie speaker aint no joke it gets pretty loud.

Even without brakelite im at 1 to 2:00 on the vol...consistently it seems.Im sure gold sounds great...im not undiggin the sound o fang though.Still have a hard time believeing that the amp isn't loud enough for capable playing volumes. As I said before you get into vol wars with some of these j/arses and that's why im hanging fang.It seems to be the louder the better you sound...right most of my adjusting is done on guitar...just run it 2:00 on (amp) tone.

It seems that adding an extension cab to a 1x10 combo in a venue that is bigger or in playing with a louder band situation might help with overall ability to hear oneself. Like setting the 1x10 on top of a 1x12 ... but obviously that requires carrying more stuff. One thing I do know is that there is no way in heck that you're ever gonna get " mesa" guy to turn down

Oh you don't know how true that is brudda!!!!! That kinda of kills the grab and go theory....? I guess it becomes grab and go and go and grab and go again. Not worth it for most "casual" settings, but if I had to do it for a living I'd manage.

I also tilt mine back against the wall on a angle so the speaker is coming upwards towards me so I can hear it better.

Im starting to think that's what im gonna have to do too Im going to try this stand stuff...ive always had on floor or small stool.Guy that hosted this jam sunday had one, swears by it.Hes no slouch. If I was in more controlled volume environment wouldn't feel the need...but im tired of people telling me im too loud when others seem louder than I do...maybe works, maybe doesn't...not always the room up on stage rev or id do same brudda.
