I have a studio situation coming up where I'll be micing my rig. I have a standard Z-best with a vintage 30 and a g12h and I'm wondering, is there a concensus on which speaker is "better" to mic? What are the tonal differences in these speakers? I suppose I could put a mic on both and a/b 'em but thought I'd get some opinions.

I'd think close mic each speaker, then have a "room" mic a few feet away from the cab would be the ideal scenario.

The V30 is a higher wattage speaker that is described as bright and punchy, where as the G12H is a lower wattage speaker and is described as warm and woody.

If the studio can handle it I'd say that "rcrecelius" tip - is the way to go. Not beyond the bounds of possibility that the engineer will suggest just that.
The three channels can then be panned/mixed and treated any ol' way for best results. One good mike a little bit away from the cab can also work out fine - it depends.

Excellenté guys - I like the "warm and woody" description. I think I remember my wife describing me that way early in our marriage... not so much any more!

Any studio should have enough mics and channels available to mic both. Then mix or omit according to taste. I'm a fan of distant micing in a medium to large lively room with one or two large diaphragm condensers. But it's hard to screw anything up with a couple of sm57s close miced.

Absolutely mic both speakers. Listen to them individually during the playback. You may like one or the other or both mixed! AND the room mic also.
