I'm fairly new to this forum and have not posted much but I read it all the time. Thanks for all the info here to everyone. I have a M 18 Jr N/R and a Avatar Cab. I finally have the Maz and effects pretty well set up for the volume I can play at (family and neighbors ect.) but here is my question. I have Cel. Speakers in the cab and am wondering how long break in takes and does it need to be at fairly loud volumes or is it just time with signal coming through the cab. Thanks

Loud is better to break in speakers. You will hear improvments incrementally after 5 hours. After 20-40 hours it will sound real good... more chime, better bass, sweeter tone and a more relaxed sound. Now how to do it.... well if you can hook up just the speaker to an amp and run your cd player into it for several hours each day, it will speed it up. Here is what I did today... I took my speaker cab with a new speaker out to the garage, then hooked up the cab to a transistorized bass amp, then ran a cd player into the bass amp... turned up the bass and volume and ran the amp loud. I also shut the garage door and just let it go for 2 hours. I plan to do this for a week to break in the speaker... it works great this way. Good luck.

I agree 100%........In close to 40 years of "doin' it"..this is the Very best way I have found to break in a new speaker.. ;D ;D T..

if you want to "cheat" a bit, you can put your cab/speakers on Variac for a few hours in between playing through them loud. the level of AC to be fed depends on the impedance and wattage rating of your cab.

I have the Dr. Z 2x12 Matching Stang Ray cabinet with Al Blues in it. To speed up break in, I've been playing it with a 5 watt Epiphone Valve Junior head cranked in my studio. I think I have about 25 hours TOTAL on the speakers right now and it's a huge difference. Even with the small amp I had to keep the speakers across the room though, but it was nice hearing some power chords and Jimmy Page type tele sounds coming out of it.

I just got my Weber 1230-55 and Alnico Blue Dog in a few days ago. I tried to play them alot to break them in, but they were still sounding really stiff. I plugged a powered mixer with a cd player into my cabinet and let it run for a total of 5 hours( with a few breaks in between)
Wow! What a difference! Already, alot of the mid-range harshness went away and the speakers are significantly smoother sounding. Over the next few days, I will continue to play the CD through the cabinet.

Not that loud at all - I'm too scared that I'm going to blow something
