I'm looking for a replacement speaker for my Maz Jr. NR I was wondering what was smoother I'm thinking along the lines of a 50 watt silver bell ceramic is this too much of a power rating should I go with 30. Any other ideas on getting a smoother tone out of the junior would be appreciated.

I was always kinda fighting the maz, with the stock speaker it was quite bright and a little too edgy for my tastes, even with the cut WAY down. I think an Alnico would be the better choice to smooth it out. The amp has enough punch and aggression to still sound great, and you'll gain some richness and warmth. Wattage rating to suit your volume needs. I'd love to hear a Maz with an old Jensen 15" P15N!! I have a couple of old combos that use 7189A power tubes (super EL84 w/ slightly different pin-out), and the 15's sound amazing with these tubes and wattages.

I prefer the Alnico's myself. I had always been a die hard ceramic speaker guy until I started playing the Z amps. These amps sound so responsive that I think the alnico speakers add a little extra mid sweetness to the mix. Nothing harsh at all, but just enough bloom and compression to really make the amp sound alive. Every nuance of your playing gets accentuated in the most musical of ways. Some however prefer the more aggressive nature of ceramic. It's all personal taste, so if you were able to try out some alnico speakers first, that might be the way to go. After all, what sounds perfect for me might be trash for you. Just my two cents.

My 50 watt ceramic Silver Bell is in a 1x12 open back cab and sounds nice with the Maz NR combo (but not nice enough for me to pull the Cele Blue out). The 50 watt is warmer & smoother than the 30 watt according to Ted Weber which is why I went for the 50 watt version.
