I was just curious, what's the characteristic of a blown speaker? I've never blown a speaker before, but the other night my buddy was playing his amp and it sounded really bad on certain notes and higher volumes. Lots of vibrating noises and rattling. It only happened on certain notes and at higher volumes, so I'm leaning more toward the cab rattling, but he seems to think he blew a speaker. Any advice? The cab and speakers are new, so it's not like he had been playing it fine for a while and it just started happening out of the blue. It's done it since he got it.

Actually when I've had speakers blow they didn't really blow they just sounded great and then stopped period. No warning at all. It is possible for things to happen like the dust cover coming loose or what was a small tear has become larger. I would swap in another speaker out of another amp and see if that sound goes away. I would also try a different amp into that cab first. Also check handles or wheels or something else on the cab to be sure they're not rattling. Also move the cab to a different part of the room or another room altogether just to be sure it's not actually something eles vibrating. Basically you want to confirm that it is the speaker itself and not just some simple mechanical vibration that could be easily cured.

I had a speaker come apart on one of my THD 2x12's once. The voice coil former came loose from the cone, so it made a horrible rattling sound. But it rattled on every note, not just certain ones.

I actually saw a JBL speaker in a PA system catch fire once at a club in Ft Worth. Always heard about it, but had never seen it 'til then. Grill cloth caught too, club employees were running around like headless chickens looking for a fire extinguisher 'til a guy I knew stood in his chair, shook up his longneck, and sprayed it in there! Worked like a charm, I hope they bought him another beer.... Also, our drummer Joe Yuele tells me of a 'guitar duel' in Spain between Coco Montoya and... can't remember who the other guy was, somebody sittin' in, but Coco started sustaining this note, it went into feedback and he kept on holdin' it 'til one of the 12's in his Marshall box caught fire and buned the grill cloth off the cab! Crowd went nuts. I myself think there was a little 'pre-planned pyro' involved, maybe not.

Me and my buddy from high school managed to fry (literally) his Dad's stereo speakers...POOF! About a 3ft. flame shot out of one of them. And then at a later time we fried one of his BF Dual Showman's too...POOF-CRACKLE-WHIZZ!
I've had speakers (CTS Alnicos') come unglued while playing. They just started to rattle, rattle some more, then flap.
