I have a ZBest 212 that runs at 4 Ohms but a have a 16 Ohm Hotplate that I'd like to use. Will it change the tone to run the cab at 16 Ohms? Or can I use the Hotplate even though the cab is 4 Ohms? Thanks

It sounds like if your ZBest cab is 4 ohms that it must have 2 8 ohm speakers in parallel. That being the case you could wire the speakers in series instead and have a 16 ohm cab. Does that address the dilema?

Just happened to think. Does your amp have a 16 ohm tap to plug your rewired to series cab into?

Thanks I wouldn't run the 4 ohm cab on a 16 ohm Hot Plate. You can usually get away with being off by one step, but not two. As far as how it might affect the tone, opinions vary. When you go from 4 ohms to 16, you'll be using more windings in your output transformer. There are two lines of thinking relative to that: 1) It'll change your sound. 2) That's preposterous. The one thing is, by rewiring to 16 ohms and using the 16 ohm tap, you most certainly have not put anything in jeopardy. I suggest you try it and let us know if YOU think it changed the sound. You can always wire it back to 4 ohms. But at 16, you'll be able to use that Hot Plate.

I would think that the most difference you'll hear would be the same as moving your tone knobs a hair. Go for it, it's easy to do!

Thanks guys, I'll let you know what I end up doing. I used to switch my old 212 from 4 to 16 Ohms all the time. I guess I never really noticed much of a difference. But you know how it is once you get to this level of tonal sophistication. Everything makes a difference. I find that me ear gets more and more attuned to the differences. I swear that some times I'm just chasing ghosts!
