I have a little solid state 15 watt Vox Pathfinder. For what it is, it's a fantastic amp. I say 'amp' because the "specially voiced 8 inch bulldog speaker" is crap. Or at least I think it's crap. The amp sounds wonderfull (for a solid state practice amp) through a 12 inch speaker....so I know the 'amp' part is nice. But that speaker just ruins the sound.
The problem is, I don't know if it's a lousy sounding speaker, or just the fact that it's an 8 inch speaker. I'm considering getting a Jensen P8R and giving that a try. It's the same size speaker. So if it still sounds bad, that could be an indication that I don't like 8 inch speakers. I'm also considering a Jensen P10R, but I'll have to take the cabinet apart, take the grill cloth and piping off, cut the soundboard to fit a 10 inch speaker, put it all back together again. A lot of work that I don't want to do.
The amp is so cool, cheap and light. Perfect for rehearsals. But that crappy speaker doesn't sound good, and even with 15 watts blasting though it, it compresses too much and can't keep up with a drummer in a small-ish basement area.
I'm even considering taking the amp out of the combo (It's in it's own shoebox type enclosure), drilling two holes for a shoulder strap and using it like that.
Any comments?

I have a Pathfinder 15R and it sounds cool when I play it through a Celestion Blue. I think trying the Jensen (or some other 8") is a great idea.

Yeah, I'm willing to be the amp would sound great with Blue. But the cabinet isn't big enough for a 12 inch speaker.

Yeah I plug it into my Victoria 5112 celstion blue. Maybe the thing to try is a Weber AlNiCo Blue Pup 8 inch! They're only $35 too. Hmmmm...I may do this.
