I have been considering trying a 5v4 in my Maz SR and I know it is safe but does anyone know if it is safe/a good choice for a Marshall jtm 45 ri? I have read one person mention that a 5r4 might be a better option. I'm trying to get the volume down on my Jtm 45 ri. Have tried running 6v6's with no luck really. Just as loud. Thought a different rectifier tube might be worth a try and I could use it in my Maz sr as well. Buster

I'm not sure if the iron in the jtm reissue can handle a 5v4.

Thanks for the mention. I think you are right. I found mention on the Tubestore web site, not to use 5V4 with the JTM 45 reissue. That must be the reason.

I'm not really sure what their issue would be with that. There shouldn't be any danger since the filament current draw of those two tubes is essentially the same. You might have the 5V4 confused with the 5U4 which draws one more amp. The 5V4 would have a little more sag but there would be very little change in the volume.

I thought that may be the case but I read otherwise on another forum also. Here is the quote right off the Tubestore website. It relates to the reissues. About half way down the link. "Rectifier tube is 5AR4/ GZ34. This tube should be of good quality. 5R4 types may also be used, although the amplifier will sound different. Do not attempt to use 5Y3, 5V4 or 5U4 types." www.thetubestore.com/Resources/Guitar-Amp-Info/Marshall-Amplifiers-Pre-1990-info#JTM45%20later/reissue%20versionWhich leads me to wonder about the 5r4. I will contact them and see if I can get more insight. Thanks Buster
