Whats the difference in Mono vs Stereo?
Also, is it better to run an amp at 4 ohms compared to 8 ohms? Or does it matter, as long as the cab is properly rated?
I'm wondering, because the Avatar cabs can be ordered as mono or stereo, in either 4, 8, or 16 ohm cabs. I'm assuming that their 8 ohm cab is two 16 ohm speakers wired in parallel, but what would the difference be in mono or stereo? Is the stereo cab able to be daisy changed with another cab?

A stereo cab alows you to plug two amps into the cab. If it is a 2x12, there can be 1 amp per speaker. Usually those type of cabs have an option for mono, so both speakers will be run from one amp. So, if you get 2 8 ohm speakers in the cab, you can run one speaker with an 8 ohm amp output. If it is mono, you would go from the 4 ohm amp output (assuming the speakers are in parallel in "mono").

I used to plug a 50 watt Marshall 1987X into one side of a Marshall 4x12 box and a Dual Showman into the other side and a/b the two sounds. I doubt that marshall intended it to be used that way but I did.

How about amps running cabs that are 4, 8 or 16?
Is the amp running more efficient when it is pushing a 4 ohm cab? or a 16 ohm cab?

You should match total speaker impedance to the amp output impedance. On the amp, it is a matter of where the transformer is tapped, so I'm not sure it has any effect on the "efficiency" of the amp.

So the amp doesn't care if its running 4 ohm out into a 4 ohm cab or 16 ohm out into a 16 ohm cab? Seems someone told me that its better to run at a higher rating, i.e. 16 out into a 16 ohm cab.

Well, you bought the whole transformer, so you might as well use it! ;D You're pushing the limits of my knowledge on the subject. If no one else knows for sure, this would be a good question to post in the "Ask Myles" expert forum.

There is that theory but I believe Dr Z said it's not important at all with a really good transformer. He said just make it match and you're good to go.

i was speaking with a very reputable amp builder in the LA area today and this very question popped up. he said that his preference in a 2x12 configuration is for the speakers to be 8 ohms each wired in series for a 16 ohm load. however, he was not opposed to parallel wiring, or 16 ohm (technically 15 ohm) speakers wired for an 8 ohm load (which seems to be most common). of course, it really comes down to preference and what your ears tell you sounds best.
