You think this site is free. Oh no, this site will eventually cost you and cost you big. You read the various amp sections and start thinking, yeah, I would like one of those. The next thing you know you are at the bottom of the slippery slope, but at least you have your next Z amp in your hands. hehe So thought about a Remedy before, but when the master volume and eq bypass upgrades became available, I was a lot more interested; especially the master volume. Bought one one the bay the other night and it should be here next week! A 2009 red on red with the upgrades recently performed. From various threads and comments it sounds like the Remedy works well with many different speakers in either open or closed back cabs. I would love to try many speakers and cab combos that is not possible. I just bought a Remedy after all. So what are your opinions on the following, will this combo do the Remedy justice and allow good tones? I have a Stangray and a matching 2x12 open back Z cab with two blues. I was already planning on swapping out one or both of the blues for a gold. Now with the Remedy probably will swap both blues to golds. At this point I am considering using both the Ray and Remedy live for their respective tones with the single 2x12 cab via an amp switcher. At least eventually someday. I already know the golds will sound great with the Ray. Shouldn't the golds also allow the Remedy to shine as well? Play a tele and a Les Paul for mostly modern country, i.e. southern rock pretty much anymore, and a few classic rock tunes. The Ray will cover any classic country tunes very well. Thanks, Jerry

Congrats on the Remedy. I saw that up on eBay and once it sold I thought, someone is gonna be really happy. I had the mod done to mine and love it. Watch out with the wattage if you try to run your Remedy at 40 watts into the pair of Blues. It won't handle it. Use the 20 watt setting.
The Remedy sounds good through a Gold or even better, pair of Golds. The Gold used to be one of the favorite speakers to run with the Remedy...until the Creamback came out last year. Don't get me wrong, both the Gold and Creamback sound great. The Creamback is a 97 db speaker where the Gold is 100 db so the Creamback will let you crank the Remedy more to get all the goodness out of the amp. To me, the Creamback sounds more "Right" with the Remedy than the Gold.
I run a 1x12 Z Cab with the Creamback and also use a Z Best with 2 G12 M Heritage speakers. Both work well. The "Greenback" type of speaker will give you more of that Marshall tone if that is what you are looking for.
You really can't go wrong with either speaker.

Bryan,
Are you running your 1x12 creamback cab open back? As far as tone, I want a speaker that sounds great with both the Ray and Remedy. The Ray was made to be used with blues/golds and it sounds like the Remedy also sounds good with the gold. So the 2x12 open back with golds may be the answer.
However, the creamback is appealing since it is less efficient than golds. The Ray is one loud amp at 30 watts, no master vol, with blues, that I have it air braked down to 4 clicks live just to get to 9 o'clock on the volume. Would like to open the Ray up more for sure.
So how would you compare the gold to the creamback. Does the creamback retain some of the gold characteristics such as chime or are they pretty different? The creamback is a ceramic I believe, so maybe more bass response from the CB? What are other similarities and differences.

Hi Jerry. I run my 1x12 with the Creamback closed back. I am going to try it open back soon. I was playing a gig on a small stage this past weekend and i was a little too close to my amp to hear it so i didnt want to blast the front row, I had to really listen. Had the back been off, I could hear it better I think. I heard my other guitar player across the stage. He has a Monza with a 1x12 G12H-30. Outdoors, I like the closed back sound.
The Gold is much louder than the Creamback. It is more efficent so it will be louder. It also has more mids than the CB. The CB has more bass. The ceramic magnet of the CB gives it a snappier response and the Gold is a little more mellow. The Gold needs to be pushed a bit to hit the sweet spot so keep that in mind.

Since you have an air brake you might as well use the Remedy with the 2x12 with the Celestion Blues speakers. Those sound great with both amps... I NEVER use the Remedy at 40 watts, it's really loud. I like to use it at 20 watts and turn both volumes up to noon.
Gold is alnico, Creamback is ceramic. They are very different speakers in tone and feel but both sound great.

A Remedy with a 97db creamback (even @ 40 watts) will be much quieter than a Stangray run with a gold. (I've had both these setups.) That Gold is just SO loud.

I hope you enjoy it, I had a bid on that amp. Not really a red guy so I was not too bummed and figured it was going to someone around here that would give it a good home.

Congratulations on your Remedy.
I had a chance to compare a Gold and a Creamback in a 1x12 closed back enclosure.
They both sound wonderful. Personally, I favor the Creamback as I think its character suits the Remedy's voice better. I now have a 2x12 enclosure with Creambacks, and I'm very happy with it.
Of course, one reason I went with Creambacks before the mod was to tame the volume a bit. As John points out above, it makes a BIG difference. Perhaps it's not quite as important with the PPIMV, but I'm finding that the Remedy is at its best with the MV set higher rather than lower.

I also went from the gold to the creamback. I have two 1/12 cabs with creambacks one I use at home closed and the other live open. When I play live I am right in front of my amp and cab. I experimented with it closed for a while but prefer it open so its staying open live. I would be curious to hear the gold with the remedy now with the MV and tone bypass. I loved the Gold with the remedy its a wonderful combination. I still think that the creamback is better match with the remedy even with the mod. I have a gold in my Ghia 1/10 ( Thanks John) I been going back and forth between the Gold and the creamback with the Ghia. Since my remedy's in the shop thats been my new thing testing that ghia with the creamback. They both sound excellent with the ghia. I may have to get one of those splitters and run them both!

I already know the golds will sound great with the Ray. Shouldn't the golds also allow the Remedy to shine as well? YES! You can't go wrong with the Gold's. With any amp. I had a Creamback it is a nice speaker. I loved it with my Remedy..liked it with my Z28...and didn't like it with my Z Wreck. The Gold sounded great with all the above amps, in addition to my Antidote and Maz Jr NR. In my opinion, the Gold is a more versatile speaker. More amp friendly. Yes, it's 3 db louder than the Creamback, but that's what AirBrakes and volume controls are for. Good luck on your decisions and congrats on your new Remedy.

WIth the PPIMV, you don't need to worry about the sensitivity of the speakers anymore, just the TONE!

I appreciate everyone's input and comments. As I am trying to bridge a single cab between the two amps I will most likely stay with the blue/gold option even though they are such efficient speakers and loud. It will be easier to tame the blues/golds with the Remedy's master volume, but the Ray will still be very loud as John mentioned and which I am experiencing with the Ray now. Along with Mike and others, I am sure I will always run the Remedy at 20 watts so I could use the current cab with blues too. As far as the red tolex, this Remedy will be my first to change things up a bit. My other two Zs are black tolex with the Ray sporting a blonde valance. I always thought if I did get a Remedy I would get a red one given its rock tone design and for a symbolic reason for me. See my wife is a so called red head, so now I will have two red heads in the house so to speak. As I mentioned earlier I was envisioning using an amp switcher such as a Radial Head bone for both amps with the one speaker cab. But the more I think about it, I am now very concerned about something going wrong when using the switcher and load going away from the non-used head and blowing amp components, maybe in both amps. Anyone have any experience with such a setup? Otherwise if I go with a traditional a/b/y amp switcher I can see going with a 1x12 cab with a creamback for the Remedy and some sort of blue/gold for the Ray, unless the creamback did well in the Ray for me too. Just want to retain those Ray, tele, blue/gold tones.

The Radial Headbone VT (for two tube amps) will do this and specifically puts a load on the amp not in use so that there are no problems. Yes, I have one, so this comes from direct experience I used it recently to do a/b listening with a Remedy and Antidote, for example.

I use one of miy Radial Headbones with my Stingray and a Maz GT into a Gold no issues with it. I also use one with a Z28 4x10 combo and Galaxie and another with a pair of original Prescriptions into an early Z-Best. No issues.

I've gone from always 20W to always 40W Radial Headbones are pretty darn robust - I don't think you need worry about the load failing - I've never heard of that happen. Excellent piece of kit!

Just a thought, how about splitting up the speakers i.e. 1 gold and 1 creamback and a amp head devoted to each speaker. This way you could just use a A/B/Y switcher and get 1 or both amps cooking at the same time?

I am glad to hear that the headbone switcher works well and is an option, but I do like the thought of having the speaker combos you mention for each amp and the ability to blend the Remedy and Stangray together. I wonder how that would sound. If I went with the separate cab approach, it would cost even more money as I would have to buy a 1x12 cab and a creamback. Also considering how many times I could use the full setup live with stage space at some of our venues. I could stack all on each other and I think that would work, but I use a 3 space rack on my amp head now and that might get too tall and unstable. I have a power conditioner, wireless in ear transmitter and wireless guitar receiver in the rack. So with the two wireless units, I want them higher and off of the ground, especially for when I go out into the audience.

^^^^
Or rewire the 2x12 with 2x inputs - one to each speaker, so you basically have two 1x12s but in the same cab? It's not common, but I've seen it done.

The brown truck arrived Tues with my Remedy. I did not have a lot of time to test drive but did get some time in. First test was with my tele into the 2x12 blue cab. Great cleans as others have mentioned and of course a great overdrive/distortion tone. Next up was the Les Paul and again great cleans and a great overdrive/distortion. The blues sounded good with the Remedy and both guitars.
The bypass sounds great as well and as others have mentioned, nowhere near the volume bump that my Maz Jr has with the bypass. I think I get a large volume bump with my Maz because I mostly play tele with the Maz and thus try to keep the brightness down by setting the presence, mid and treble pretty low; 9 - 10 o'clock range.
The next day I plugged the Remedy into the celestion gold of my Maz Jr sc combo cab. This time I just went with the LP straight off. Again, great tones. Between the 2 blues and the gold, the gold sounded better overall. I was not playing loud at all with the master pretty fully engaged at 20 watts. Switched to 40 watts to ensure it worked for a few seconds, then back to 20 watt setting. I really can't imagine this amp without the master as getting to the heavier overdrive tones would be nearly impossible for me, even with an air brake.
Did most of my tone shaping with the two volumes as opposed to the bass, mid and treble. The BMT did not seem to make a big difference. Ran the BMT at noon for the most part, especially just getting used to the amp.
I noticed some hum from the amp that I have not noticed with either of my other two Zs. Not too loud, but enough to catch my attention. Anyone else experience this? Maybe this is normal and my guess is that there is no issue. The upgrades were just performed in May, so the Doc went through the amp, but it was just shipped, in the original box, so I thought that I would ask. This hum was present when stand by was switched to off, ready to play iirc, and did not matter where the volumes were set.
This is my first red amp and I am really liking the red. A nice change from mostly all black tolex of my other amps and cab.

^^^ Great report, and you have nailed the Remedy spot on! Yes, there is a quiet, but noticeable hum from the Remedy, but once you start playing, even at home volumes, it vanishes from my hearing totally. Gigging is even better, as at stage volumes, even when not playing, it's just not noticeable at all. When you feel comfortable with the Vs, use the TMB to fine tune your tone - that's how I think of these things. I like my Vs around 11 o'clock, and then just dial in the brightness and mids I want, and usually roll off a little bass. Ready to rock I've said it before, and I'll say it again, but I do love the cleans on this amp (the OD tones are a given!!)
