Just brought home my first Z amp yesterday, a brand new Z-28 1-12 combo, and I couldn't be happier. I love it just the way it is, and don't plan on modding it in anyway, but I think I'm going to get an extension cab for extra flexibility. I was looking at the Avatar Cabs, because I have seen a lot of people talking about them here in the forums. Are they really as good as they seem to be? The price seems right, I love the speaker choices, and they provide a lot of cosmetic options. Do they sound as good as they look, and for those who own one.........how's the durability?

Just a quick reply and 100% endorsement. I own a Premier 2x12 in red tolex to match my Stingray head and formerly my MAZ 38 head. I gig with it frequently, and all I can say is yes to all your questions. Sounds great; 1st rate build quality and durability, and most importantly, customer service and satisfaction is second to none. Great company and products, and prices. Harold

I am also a believer in Avatar cabs. I just got my second 1x12, this one with a partially open back. It's a solid build, and the company is first rate. I also have a closed-back 1x12 with an Eminence Governor in it, and I've used it at numerous gigs. It's held up well. The new one is going to have a Tone Tubby alnico in it....(Can't wait to have it up and running!!).

i just got an avatar premier 2x12 closed back with G12H heritage speakers to go with my KT-45. it is the first time i have purchased a cab with new speakers and i am wondering how much the tone will improve/change after everything is broken in. the build of the cabinet is excellent, but the sound is average at best. the tone is tight and thin; flat wiith very minimal low end response - nothing like these speakers are supposed to sound. when i run the KT-45 through my jcm 800 2x12 combo with vintage 30s the tone is specatcular. i expected the new speakers to sound tight right out of the box, but nothing like this. i am hoping it's nothing more than needing to break in the speakers. any advice? some other opinions would help. thanks.

Sorry to hear about this. I'm pretty sure it's not a problem with the cab itself. It may be the speakers, or the fact that they're not broken in yet. The fact that you say you have minimal low end in a closed back cab is a bit of a concern. You may want to pop the back off the cab to make sure the speakers are wired correctly, in phase with each other, and of the proper impedance.
If all else fails call them up. Dave at Avatar is 1st rate ,and he'll make sure you're satisfied
Good Luck!
Harold

I've got an Avatar 2x12 closed back cab and I gig with it. Haven't had any problems. Sounds great with my Route 66. Solid build. Good price. I got it made with a vin 30 and a G12H30 like the Z-best. And the handles are recessed if you want to turn it sideways (that's what I do.)

....the tone is tight and thin; flat wiith very minimal low end response - nothing like these speakers are supposed to sound. .... how old are your V30s in the Marshall cab? i must admit V30s that have been "beat on" for a long time sound great. how thick is the front baffle of your Marshall cab? another thing to try would be to put those V30 in your Avatar cab and see how they sound. i've owned one of their 2x12 cabs, so i know they are pretty solid but there're always other things to consider when it comes to guitar cabs.

mudskipper, thanks for the feedback. the V30s in my marshall cab are 22 years old so they are well "beat on" and sound amazing. the baffle on the marsall cab is pretty airy, not thick at all. the avatar does not seem significantly different in terms of thickness so i don't think it is the baffle. the closed back could be a contributing factor, but shouldn't make the cab sound like it is covered with a wet rag. i am hoping it's just the new speakers. they shold open up and fatten up as they get broken in. keep the feedback coming. i really appreciate it.

just a quick update. with only a couple of hours of playing time i already notice a huge difference. the speakers are coming alive. the bass, crunch, and growl that i was expecting from these G12H heritage speakers is starting to come out. the highs are still "shrill" at times, but i imagine that too will start to loosen up and mellow out. the break-in process is fascinating. i think the G12Heritage is going to work out. also, just to stay on topic, i highly recommend the avatar cab. the construction and quality is excellent, and the customer service is top notch. cheers.

interesting about the V30s. Never been completely satisfied with them. Sounds like I need to beat the he&% out of them for a while and give them a second change ...

people seem to either love or hate the V30s. i have never played new V30s so i cannot comment fully, but my old beat up pair sure do sound sweet. they are still characteristic V30s - punchy with a lot of mids. but the lows are fat and the highs have a nice smooth presence. but it's all a matter of opinion, perspective, and preference.

mudskipper, thanks for the feedback. the V30s in my marshall cab are 22 years old so they are well "beat on" and sound amazing. yeah, i bet. i don't know why i didn't keep my beat-up V30s. a stupid move on my part..... oh, the baffle thickness does change the sound quite a bit as well as how speakers are loaded. for example, 3/4" front baffle on a smallish cab (like MESA Boogie size) with a single 12" spkr sounds way too boxy. i'm sure what you are hearing is the newness of the speakers. they should get better as you pound on them. it would be cool for you to find out how the V30s sound in the Avatar cab for a reference, though. then you'd know what to look for in your next cab.

I'll weigh in with a positive vote. My regular cab is a G12H Special V30/H30. These are very inexpensive (you're getting the cab for free if you factor in the speakers) and the cab sounds great. Incidentally, it's gigged 100 plus jobs and been mishandled lots in the process, but it's holding up just fine except for some skinned tolex covering. Dave's a great guy to boot if there's a problem. Disclaimer.. I am not affiliated with Avatar, just a happy customer.

I once owned an Avatar and Z-Best at the same time and thus got the chance to do an A/B. The Z won due to having more bottom end - but that's about it. Good in every other way. Sold the Avatar to my cousin and he loves it. I also have an Avatar 1-12 loaded with a Red Fang - excellent. Bass player buddy bought a 2-10 bass cab and loves it. Great value.

+1 for the Avatars. Have had my 212 for about 4 years and it's still rock solid and toneful. Amazing bang-for-the-buck.

Dave Avatar is a friend of mine and a super stand up guy. I don't have a cab but get all my speakers from him. I would think anything he does is top notch!!
