Howdy folks. I have a Maz Jr 2x12 combo w/Weber Alnico Blues. The sound is wonderful. I know alot of people use a Silver and a Blue with their combos. My question is what tonal differences can be had by puting a Silver in place of one of the Blues?
I have searched the topic and can't find this question. I've seen several discussions about alnico versus ceramic but I'm more interested in a blue versus a silver. If I missed a thread then point me in the right direction. Thanks.

OK... Let me start out by saying that the Blue & Silver are spinoffs of the same basic thing. The alnico versions are, obviously, based on the 60's alnico Celestions found in Vox & Marshall amps. The ceramic versions are essentially spinoffs on the "greenback" theme. Point being... Don't expect a drastic difference. It's subtle. But, there's some complexity that's added that you won't get by using two of the same model. The Silver Bell has smooth, bell-like highs and a bold bottom. The Blue is slightly more focused in the mids with a touch more chime. Put 'em together in a Z, and you make an already versatile amp even more so.

Cool. Thanks Jay. That's what I was looking for. I think it will be worth the try. It's hard for me to tell from diagrams what the sound will actually do. That helps. dl
