I thought it was time to share my experience with yet another 12" speaker with my open back cabinet. After nearly 10 years with my Z28 amp head and testing various speakers through countless practices and gigs...my new WGS G12C/S speaker appears to be the best of them. Very smooth with a clear clean sound, turn up the amp and it now produces a great OD...it takes pedals extremely well. I was really surprised with the results. More break-in time will be necessary but with over 8 playing hours which includes playing at a decent volume, it just sounds really good. wgs4.com/12-g12cs-75-wattsCheck out some of the videos since there are many YouTube videos on the WGS G12C/S speaker. I'm very happy with the sound of this amp and speaker, so I thought I'd share some good news...now I'm looking and saving for another cab...with either 2-10's or 4-10's. The Z28 is such a great Amp!!

^^^ Thank you, however I've been on the forum (registered) since 2008 back when a friend of mine told me there was a Dr Z forum. Looks like my thread count has restarted? I don't post much cause allot of my questions are usually asked/ answered in someones thread. I bought the amp new back in 2004 and it's one of the few pieces of gear I'll never sell.
There's something weird about owning this amp...it sounds so good I tend not to tell anyone about the amp. When I play live with the band, I always put the Amp Head on the ground beside the speaker cabinet and run my pedal(s) cable straight into the amp head, this way I don't accidentally bump into the input cable damaging the input jack....I did that many years ago and broke the input jack of my Fender. My cabinet is black with a silver grill cloth, people think I'm playing a Fender. Call me paranoid but I don't want anyone seeing and stealing this amp...someone stole my G&L ASAT 12 years ago from a gig.
I love this new speaker!!

Hi! Interesting speaker choice as that model doesn't seem to get much notice. I too have been digging WGS and plan on adding to the collection.
im wondering what other speakers have you tried to come to this speaker? and what type of music you play?
I'm playing hard rock and am currently digging a pair of greenbacks in a zbest but am on what seems like a never ending search for tone.
Thanks forthe review!

Good to hear, it is such a great amp. Love to get a breakdown of the speakers you have been through. So far I have tried V30, G12h (currently my fav), and greenback.

Hello, here is a follow-up to my 12" WGS speaker since it's been a solid 10 months of testing and playing my Z-28 Amp and WGS speaker...the speaker seems to be better broken in. It's smoother at higher volumes with zero harshness in treble and a tight bass response. The 99.8db/spl gives this amp some excellent head room.
Right now, I'm thinking of adding a 2-10" cab with the same speakers in a 10" size...yep I'm loving this speaker.
As for my past speakers in my 1-12" open-back cab:
1st speaker: A basic Fender...the same one used in a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe. I ran my old '96 HRD on top of this extension cabinet, sometimes using the extension cabinet as a monitor. I used this speaker with my Z-28 starting in 2006 when I first got my Z-28. It worked but lacked any real definition, almost lifeless compared to my next choices.
2nd speaker: A Jensen C12K...very bass heavy so I simply turned down the bass. Unfortunately, turning down the bass on this amp also effects other great frequencies that many Dr Z owners can attest to. Therefore, having this speaker for 2 years left me wanting more.
3rd speaker: Eminence Red Coat-The Governor...very mid range heavy and now my little "brown faced fender deluxe reverb" style Z28 sounded like a little Marshall. It distorted way too early and I was becoming a bit frustrated with this great amp. Living in Canada we seem to have to order speakers that we've never before unless we heard it on YouTube. I used this speaker for 3 years and purchased pedal to suck-out some mids out of my guitar...it worked but once again I knew this amp deserved better. My drummer had a 1-12" cab that I used at his place with my amp that sounded allot better...the darn speaker and cabinet were so old that we didn't know what speaker was in there. Lol
4th speaker: Wgs G12C/S 75W at 8 Ohms...this speaker is loud and clear with a low mid-range giving the amp plenty of headroom. Now I get it, you can play this amp with all 3 knobs straight up with my Strat. Adding my David Allen Strat pickups in my Deluxe Strat and the sound is simply awesome. My G&L Tele ASAT sounds great too. With my Les Paul I have to turn the amp down a bit since it's now too loud.
It's been 8 solid years with this amp...not one tube change and not one problem. I let it warm up for at least 15 minutes on standby before I ever play through it. Perfect amp?? Yep

Big WGS fan here. I currently have a G12A in my convertible Z-cab, and a ET-65 in my MAZ combo. Occasionally I switch those back and forth, but both sound really good, just different. I've considered the G12C for some time...from your description, sounds like something I'd like.

When I had my Z-28, it came with a greenback. I didn't like it, so I put a G12H30 clone from WGS. The recessed mids of the speaker offset the mids of the amp, but the bass of the speaker was too much. I ended putting the greenback back in.

You may want to change the power tubes and then you'll REALLY be surprised at the tone! Congrats on your speaker quest!
