I am getting a 1X12 cab made by Avatar (vintage style cab) and I am want a few ideas on what speaker I should get and what Ohm cab I should get (forgive the newbie questions)
Which speaker? Cele Gold, GH1230, Vintage 30, Greenback, Weber, Eminence..so many choices.
Ohms? 4,8,16?
What are your experiences?
Thanks for looking!

I've got an avatar 1x12 with a greenback in it for my 66 although I end up using my custom naked pine 2x12 more with that amp. It's got a g12h30 and a vintage30 in it. 8 ohms.

I've had experience with the following with my Route 66:
Open back 1x12 w greenback closed 1x12 w greenback
Open back 1x12 w V30 Closed back w V30
Open back 2x12 w G12H
I must say in all of this, the V30 (same speaker with open and closed back) was not broken in enough.
But out of all of this, the open back with the Greenback was the best.
However, the Greenback is a very quiet speaker compared to a G12h or a V30. Now I keep the Greenback in a closed back 1x12 cab and use it mostly for rehearsals and basement playing. I don't have to attenuate as much...if at all.
I use the V30 in an open back for gigs. If needed, I can daisy-chain the open V30 and the closed greenback for two speakers. Yes, I know the V30 will be louder, but the greenback will add some body.

For a one 12" cab, a Weber 50 W Silver Bell is *THE* perfect match for that amp. Broad bottom end and smooth top...
And I'm not a fan of Vintage 30's, but they do work well with that amp. Loud, though...

I've had experience with the following with my Route 66: Open back 1x12 w greenback closed 1x12 w greenback ... But out of all of this, the open back with the Greenback was the best.... Hmm, this makes me wonder a bit about the volume you made observations at. The GB being a 25W speaker and the Rt. 66 being a 32W amp means you were pushing the hell out of the speaker with lots of speaker breakup, or you were playing at a lower volume and not getting the amp distortion. Was this a low volume clean tone test perhaps? Or were you using a Brake on it? The reason I'm asking is because the Dr. is making my Rt. 66 now and I have debating (with myself) back and forth on the speaker for the matching 1x12 open back cab. I was thinking that the G12H30 would be the best power matching speaker for that amp. I also am badly wanting an excuse to get an alnico Gold, but concerned that the R6. 66 wouldn't have enough guts to make the speaker work to optimum tones. I always found it was best to match the ratings on amp and speaker combinations to get the best interaction. I do like GB's but never considered one in a 1x12 config for the Rt. 66 cause I figured it would blow it out no problem.

I used to have 2 greenbacks in a cab that was pretty sweet with the 66 for overdriven tones...and with 2 you didnt have to worry about blowing them...I needed more cleans though and ended up replacing them.

I bet a Gold would be sweet with the 66...the 66 really outs out more than its rated 32 watts.

In the end...I decided to go with the AVATAR Vinatge G112 with a Celestion Gold. The amp sounds amazing! The Gold is loud, chimey, smooth warm od. With my GL Bluesboy, and can get an great clean jazzy tone, boost it a bit and the tone turns into a marshall/voxy type tone. The bridge pickup sounds amazing too. Nice, gritty tone. I am using the RC boost to push the RT66 and I am very very happy.

I have a Z 2x10 cab and my suspicion is, if I ever get a Route 66, that this cab will be great.

Not to steal your thread, but I can't decide between an Avatar or Earcandy cab for my Interstate 66. I've read some comments on this forum about 2x10" cabs sounding great with the 66, so one option I'm looking at is an Earcandy SweetTooth 2x10". www.earcandycabs.com/products.php?req=read&product_id=50I was thinking of having it loaded with some of the new Eminence speakers, such as a combo of the Lil' Buddy (hemp cone) and a Copperhead. www.eminence.com/guitar.asp?speaker_size=10These speakers are affordable, and I've heard mostly good comments about them. They also have soundclips on the Eminence website, which at least gives some idea of what they sound like. Another option I thought of is to get 2 different 2x10" cabs with parallel outputs, so I could run just one of them as a 2x10", or combine them for a 4x10" sound. Obviously a Dr Z 2x10" cab would be another possibility. Or perhaps the Avatar Vintage 1x12" open back? I want a cab/speaker combo that's not too efficient, so I can run the 66 hot, but at a slightly reduced volume for recording. I bet the 1x12" with Celestion Gold sounds awesome, but man that's an expensive speaker. Has anyone ever heard the George Scholz Sugarcone 12" that Earcandy sells? It costs $225, and he says it's the best guitar speaker in the world. I'm tempted to try his Sovereign 1x12" cab loaded with one of these. At the moment I'm using a 2x12" cab that I borrowed from a friend. It's an old ADA with 50-watt Celestions. I think the top speaker may be fried or something, as it has a nasty buzz when I hit a low B. I already opened up the cab and tightened everything, and it still sucks. I can tell the amp sounds good, but I think it's far from reaching it's potential with this cab.

I've got a Weber cab coming with a Route 66 on the way as well. I ended up going with a 50 watt alnico Weber Blue Dog with light dope, so I'd imagine it's going to be pretty similar to your cab with the Celestion Gold. The Weber cab is a 6M18 combo cab (his 18 watt Marshall kit) without the chassis cutout.
