Reading this makes me glad that I bought a large supply of 12AX7 tubes about 12 years ago. They are mostly JJ, Tesla, and Sovtek. I don't know what I'll do when they run out. I also have a fair supply of NOS tubes I bought from KCANOS. One of the reasons I have limited my amp repair work to just close friends is I don't want to have to use these so I can save them for my own amps. I know that sounds selfish. Frankly, I don't know how amp manufacturers manage to stay in business with the tube supply the way it is.

Frankly, I don't know how amp manufacturers manage to stay in business with the tube supply the way it is. I would not be too concerned. Preamp tubes from the past (NOS) will last decades. 100,000+ hours is common. They are really an amazing value for the money. They last, they are reliable and oh yes, they sound better too. I cannot begin to count all the original tubes I have pulled to test from amps built in the 50s and 60s. The tubes test better than new spec. Remember, design spec was the minimum that folks needed to meet and it was generally surpassed on a regular basis. Today if you get 80% of design spec you are very lucky. If you get a year of life without the tube going microphonic you are lucky.

The biggest problem with pre tubes is so many of them are microphonic.... nothing more disappointing thatn buying a quad of NOS 12AX7's that test as new and finding out they are al severely microphonic!
