Since I'm in Carlsbad visiting my girls I decided to do my usual visit to Buffalo Brothers Guitars to buy a couple of String Swings for them nd of course to have a look around. What a big difference this year compared to last year when the ad virtually no "high end" guitars do to the terrible state of the economy. This year the had all manner of Collings, Santa Cruz, Beourgeois, Martins, etc. What reall caught my eye was a 1999 Ehlers 15CR. This featherweight Cedar and rosewood beauty played like a dream and had a full rich sound that projected extremely well and the Strindberg spacing was suitable for picking and strumming any type of music. I couldn't overdrive this by and I want it bad! The proprietor said it was from a small boutique builder in Oregon named Ehlers and that he only builds 10-15 guitars a year. He pparently died recently and the business did with him. Does anyone have any experience with these guitars? I gotta figure a way to get it. Check it out....

Steve, I'm sure I didn't play THAT one, but a few years back when I bought my Bourgeois Country Boy there I played just about everything. As I recall those were some mighty fine instruments - they were upstairs then in the same room with the Froggy Bottoms if that means anything. If it made that much of an impact on you should call them and see if they will hold it for you. Maybe have them put a nice pickup system in it unless you have your own guy and preference (which I believe you do as I recall).
Good luck. Update your "family" picture when you get it!

Yeah, they used to have a nice set up upstairs with a boat load of fine instruments didn't they? Unfortunately the upstairs is completely closed but this year the have a couple dozen boutiques downstairs and more Taylor's than should be allowed by law. they had three Bourgeois guitars, but unfortunately no Slope D's. I was hoping to molest one to see how it might get along with my JOMC Georgia Cotton Picker. That Ehlers was soooo nice. I'm still thinking about it. I stopped back in to BB yesterday to pick up another string swing and had to fondle the Ehlers again. Big mistake! Is now "Big trouble for moose and squirrel...." Although I haven't yet discussed it with my wife, she recently informed me that with the money we are spending on our daughter and granddaughters this trip to Carlsbad and our spring yard/garden expenses, I need to curtail my spending a bit. She's the CFO so I have to do some noodling on how to land this beauty. I haven't given up yet....

He pparently died recently and the business did with him. Does anyone have any experience with these guitars? I gotta figure a way to get it. Check it out.... Though some months have passed since your post, I can respond . . . . I have experience with these guitars . . . and own one of them . . . an Ehlers 16SSSBA. I tried out the one you show in your post as well, but as nice as it was, it didn't come close to the one I got. I tried out around 4 different Ehlers models, some of which I think they still have up for sale (including the one pictured in your post), but mine was heads and shoulders above the others in just about all respects. The guitar is made by Ehlers Guitars, based in Oregon. As noted, Rob Ehlers has passed away and no more guitars are being made. Mine is a 16" lower bout "small jumbo" with a European Spruce top and European Maple back & sides. All (even the back of the neck!) done up in a gorgeous sunburst finish. I was actually looking to get a guitar with a lot less "bling",but the other Ehlers I tried out (as good as they were) just couldnt match this one. The clarity and breadth of the tone of this guitar blows me away. Deep, rich bass and clear, ringing trebs . . . . Tremendous versatility - can handle whatever style you throw at it, from intricate fingerstyle to full bore strumming. Complex but clear. When you hit a chord, you can hear every note individually as well as combined. This is not hyperbole; it is truly the most amazing guitar I have ever played (and I also tried just about every high-end guitar in the very large collection they had at the store). I cannot say enough good things about my Ehlers guitar. Hope you are able to save up for yours . . .
