hello bros: I currently am a big el84 guy (have ghia,m12 & stangray -yes i love ef86 also-
and only use 12" celestion blues -tried many speakers for them - but found the blues my personal fave.
I am getting a z28 head & I know the greenback is the preferred speaker & there are many other choices you guys use. I have a blue, gold v30 & g12h30 speakers here.
thanks so much for any input

I love mine with a Blue (I've only recently started using it with the Blue and so far have only gone for clean sounds. Heavenly bloom and the mids is round and comfortable). Just watch the volume as Z28s make more power than a single Blue can handle. I also love the Gold (both 10 and 12") and the G12H30 (esp. with dirt).

Do you have a 2x12 cabinet with two blues? That would sound great, or just go with the gold.

The Z-28 sounds very nice through a 1x12 Gold. Generally, I prefer the Z-28 through Weber P12N or C12N type speakers and reserve the British voiced speakers for the EL-84 based Z's.

I haven't heard the Z28 sound bad through any speaker. One of my fav's is the g1265 and v30 combo. Best of luck on the tone quest!

G12 65 sounds GREAT! I alos love the Weber Ceramic speakers. The Z28 has a mid bump, so unless you like your mids, I'd avoid a mid heavy speaker (like the Red Fang) IMHO.

I recently got a great tip from tone guru, Eric Ambel. He suggested I should try a combo of a Ceramic and an Alnico. In my 2x12" cab I have a Jensen P12Q and a WGS Green beret (greenback clone) and this really does the trick! The Green Beret compliments the rawness and mid voiced character found in the Z28 and the AlniCo smoothens out any harsh treble frequencies. I usually play a tele, so that comes in handy. I like the Green beret/Jensen combo, but just out of curiosity I think I'll try swapping the Jensen out for a WGS Black'n blue. The other night I ran the 28 thorugh a 65 cab with a G12H and an Alnico blue which also complimented the Z in a very pleasing way. Huge and full bodied tone which breaks up juuust perfect

I like it with a blue alnico weber too. I tried the 30 and 50 watt and liked the 50 watt better but that is just me. I might try the gold one day because I have one laying around somewhere in my studio. I'm redoing my floors and it is unorganized.

After many weeks of A/B comparisons ... I settled on the 1x12 Celestion gold in the Z combo cab. I think it needed the extra room to let it breathe a bit. like I said earlier , I am a tele/el84 guy, but this z28 cuts like a knife. It is also & so much better for when i play my gibson 336 or PRS soapbar. A nice alternative to the ghia - later boys !

I'm down to 3 speaker cab options but I love them - a 12" C Gold, Creamback, and a 2x10 with a 30 watt Weber Blue Pup and Silver. I'm digging the 10's just about as much as the 12's for some venues. If you have a chance, try a 2x10 or 4x10 with your Z28 - I was quite surprised after giving them a second chance.

I'm a humbucker and P90 player... my solution was a gold for some highs, blended with a red fang or a tone tubby alnico for the mid punch. (both 10's)

Creamback with mine. Love it! Been thinking about a Creamback. What's your take between that and a gold? Assuming you have tried a gold.

The Creamback just sounds so good with my overdrive pedals. Some times it seems that the gold would have a little cone fizzle or whatever you want to call it that I didn't care for, but the cream seemed to hold up better at loud volumes. Just my opinion.

Mine's a 1x10 with a Gold and I think it sounds great with the Z28 and with the Ghia as well. Much better than the Eminence 1058 that was in there (although that sounded fine). I didn't care for the Ramrod with either amp.

Which 10"s sound best in the 2x10" combo? Greenbacks??? Group consensus Can't go wrong with a stock standard Z 210 cab with Z's special design speakers ..... imho As for the 112 question? I would be tempted to run with a well-broke-in V30 ...... or git yerself a 12-65 ...... again imho And, really, the Z-28 will play nice with just about any speaker configuration ..... based on play-time and listen-time for the past several years cheers always, Joel

I got Z speakers in mine. Like them a lot actually. I just read how so many people have great things to say following speaker swaps that I wonder if I should change them

I don't have a Z28, but i'm somewhat interested in this amp as its reported to be on the Vintage American Fender side of tones, now if that's is so and tones folks are looking for, why aren't Jensen type speakers recommended with this amp more?

That's a great question, Stan. I too see Brit-flavored speakers commonly recommended as well as being all I've used with my Z28. Is it pervasive among Z fans that we seek chime and forward mids? It seems more Z amps tend toward the Brit side than the Fullerton side. Plus the Doc seems to really dig Celestions himself. I do have a currently unused EVM12L; I imagine the Z28 would rule with it!

That's why my cab is still stock-standard ..... however, everyone hears things diffr'ent ..... and tone-chasin' can lead to all kindsa things ....... cheers always, Joel

I've got a closed back single 12 vintage 30 cab. I don't hear too much about vintage 30's and 28's. are they a little mid heavy for the amp? Wondering if I should change up cab as well before I take the plunge on a head, the closed back might just accentuate and push even more mIds forward. Any experience with this cab combination anyone?

I have a Weber Signature 12B paired with my Z-28 and it's a perfect match. It's a Jensen-type speaker motor design, but with a British style cone. So, just like the Z-28 which is Fender-y clean and then Marshally crunchy, the speaker does the same thing. It's Jensen-like clean & punchy when clean, but it breaks up into a nice crunch when you push it. Just awesome—HIGHLY recommended with the Z-28.
