Has anyone used either a Maz 18 Jr or 38 Sr or a Carmen Ghia with Tone Tubby speakers or an actual Tone Tubby speaker enclosure? Thoughts?

I have an alnico Tone Tubby in my Maz 38 sr combo. IMO a definite upgrade over G12H30. I've never tried out a TT cab.

I have two ceramic and one alnico TT. One ceramic shares space with a Celestion Vintage 30 in a THD 2 x 12, 3/4 closed cab. The other two TT's are mounted in single 12 Mesa Boogie open back cabs. I am very pleased with the way they sound in each configuration. I would be hard pressed to pick a favorite as my moods change I like a different flavor. I use a Maz 38 Sr NR head.

Thank you Billyguitar and guitarstan.
I am leaning toward buying a Maz 18 Jr Combo or the Carmen Ghia combo, and replacing the speaker with a Tone Tubby. My brother has one in his Crate 30W combo (it's ceramic), and it's great with his Musicman guitar.
Guitarstan - Can you describe the difference? What mood fits which one (ceramic vs. Alnico)? I'm very interested because I don't know anyone that has installed a Tone Tubby in a Maz combo but you - and you've used both ceramic and Alnico. Also, I think the combos are generally tuned for the speaker and cabinet, so I worry even great speakers in one spot might not be great in a Maz or Ghia. There's nobody better that I could ask - thank you in advance!

I started buying Tone Tubbies about five years ago when Stu started carrying them. I got the Original H1 Hemps and loaded them into multiple Z Cabs including 1x12's, and a 2x12 Z-Best. The only Amps used these days with them are MAZ Juniors and MAZ Seniors. Since then I put them into a couple MAZ Junior 1x12 Combos and another Z-Best and ordered them in the Original Formula H1 as well. These speakers are rated at 35 to 40 watts and are very warm and smooth and allow you to open up these amps. Some say they are darker sounding speakers, but you won't run out of Cut or Treble on the MAZ's with these speakers. I wouldn't worry about matching which Cabinet with which Tone Tubby Speaker either....I've stuffed them in every combination you can imagine including 2x10 and 4x10 configurations. All sound really GREAT! A MAZ Junior 1x12 Combo with a Tone Tubby is a Home-run. I can e-mail you some clips if interested. Mark

What are your thoughts on Webers, ie Blue Dogs and Silver Bells?

I bought the first few from FatSound Guitars when they carried them, and then the rest through Tone Tubby directly. My kid uses them exclusively, yes. He only uses Juniors and Seniors and then plugs straight-in. Whether he's playing a Strat or Les Paul, they still retain all of the guitar's charachter. These speakers are PLENTY present when playing with volume and tone controls on the MAZ's. They stay smooth and tight and don't fart or flub out and have plenty of bottom end all through the volume range. Mark (PS: No experience with the Webers you mentioned.)

I use the TT ceramics in my vibrolux and they did give it a slightly darker (warmer?) sound that I like, especially for the blues, and were a huge improvement over the Jensens. I have a MAZ SR 1X12 with the G12H30 and really like the Celestion too, but I am tempted to Tubby it also just to hear the difference.

I've just built a 2 10 enclosure with ceramic TT 10's.
I'm using it with my ghia, and they are a bit dark, they may improve with break in. Very nice when cranked up, but a little dull on the cleans. Bass is excellent, very tight.
