Just picked up a RT66 in a trade deal. I'm pretty excited to test it out. Read and heard so many great things about it. I've got a Z cab with a Gold in it that I've been playing my Maz Jr. through and I can't wait to hook the 66 up to it. I'm a little worried about it though. One of the KT66's is sorta wobbly where the glass meets the base, one of the tube sockets seems a little loose, and the chassis bolts were all slightly loose (those I made snug). I asked the previous owner about the tubes, bias and such and he didn't have much info. I'm thinking of just sending it into the Doc for an inspection and such before I even attempt to fire it up. Wouldn't want to break anything. Overall though, it seems to be in very good shape for being a '98 AND it looks to be #9. At least that's what I'm guessing from the serial number. And in case anybody was interested, here are some quick pics… The serial number is located on the top of the chassis, just to the left of the 16 ohm speaker input. It is stamped, but there is red marker over it. The same is with the stamp above the 3 amp fuse but in black.

My dream amp! I have wanted one just like that for a long time.
You may be right that a checkup with the Doc is a good idea. I wouldn't sweat the wobbly tubes too much as long as everything is snug enough for rock and roll. I have had power and rectifier tubes over the years that had a little play in between the base and the glass. If you get a rattle as you turn up the volume, and it's coming from that, you can put a small dab or two of silicone around where the glass meets the base.
The tube socket that is loose shouldn't be too hard to tighten, but don't mess with it if you aren't able to see clearly what's going on. As always, opening the amp up exposes you to some potentially high voltages, so use the appropriate cautions if you inspect that socket from the inside.
Congrats on a beauty of an amp. The Route 66 is amazing.

Great acquisition! I almost picked up #9 a few months back - I don't think he was looking for trades at that moment.
I'd check with Phil on what type of glass is in his Interstate. His is a sister to this amp and it sounds amazing.

Thanks for the replies fellas. Probably get a chance to fire up the 66 tomorrow or Sunday. Will definitely let you know how it goes.
Eddie: Thanks for the tip. I may just put a dab there just to be safe.
Mike: Were you looking to trade for it when you were looking at the 66? Was there something I didn't notice that should've kept me away? Have to admit I was definitely lured in by the fact that it was an earlier Z (the reputation of the amp preceded of course), as well as what I perceived to be a good deal.

Super congrats! I miss mine. Bone-headed trade on my part.
I hear the early ones had a softer feel due to their power filtering. I LOVED the bloom on mine. WOW.

Absolutely nothing that kept me away from the amp other than a lack of $$$ At the time I was saving up for the Antidote (I now have enough for it). I kept looking for it to come up again. Having exchanged several emails with the former owner I would not have hesitated a bit to pull the trigger. And I have both Z-28 and Delta 88 which are in the same tone family so it wasn't critical to own one right now.

Congrats on getting the Route 66. You need to get those treble and base knobs up to 3:00 and crank the volume up a bit:)

Spoke to the Doc and I decided to send it in for a refresh.
I am going to try to give it a whirl tomorrow before I pack it up to get a feel for it. First chance I'll have to plug it in. Looking forward to that.
And thanks for all the responses guys. They are all very much appreciated!

#9 is with the good doctor for a checkup.
I did plug it in for a bit through my Z 1x12 with a Gd and it was glorious. Can't wait to get it back!

So I got #9 back from the Doc two days ago. The guys at the shop did a wonderful job. Some new tube sockets and a new set of tubes among other things. Think I've found my new favorite amp. And the 3, 3, 3 deal is glorious! I'm headed back to heaven for a little while ;-)

I've been thinking of sending mine back for a checkup by the doctor.
I filled out the support form on the dr z site, but did not hear back. What steps do I need to take to get a service visit?
