Hi Everyone:
I had myself convinced from the Youtube clips I seen that the humbucker into a Z Wreck sound was not for me. On the vids I saw the overdrive clipping had a hint of fizz to it - which I really can't stand, figured it was "the way it was." Since I got my wreck it's been a Tele into it, outside from the test drive for an hour or so with various HB guitars.
Well. I have recently had a hankering for some Les Paul into Marshall tones so I got out my trusty Sligo JTM45 clone and my 91 LP standard - it's been almost a year and was really digging the sound. Since the Z Wreck was sitting right next to it, curiosity got the best of me and I plugged it.
Do you remember in Back to the Future when Marty McFly plugs into the million watt amp and he strums a chord? That's how I felt! It was powerful, articulate and very ear pleasing! I noodled with the settings a little and nailed an awesome tone in seconds. I walked around the room strumming and again was reminded of how 3-dimensional the sound is from this amp. The amp provides nice rock crunch at 12 o'clock with no hint of fizz whatsoever!
Then I switched on my Zonkin' Yellow Screamer (TS inspired pedal) and was amazed how well it blended with the amp's gain! Not a lot of gain was needed to give it that TS sound, balanced with the chimey overtones of the Z Wreck. Again, never did the gain sound "fizzy" or unpleasing.
Great. The Z Wreck made another amp dispensable! I could easily sell the JTM45 and get most of the sounds from the Wreck. It doesn't replicate that famous Marshall sound, and never would I expect it to. But what it does is beyond what I expected when I plugged it in.....
Gotta love the Wreck!
