I run a MAZ 38 NR head into a 2x12 open back cab with a Blue/Gold. I'm running this into my Gibson R9 with both volumes on the guitar at 8/10. Lead pickup has the tone maxed, and the rhythm pickup has the tone rolled back to 7.5. This amp sounds great at almost any settings, but I found a Voxy sound that I like. I'm a sucker for the Top Boost vibe, so this is in that vein. I've tried to get this sound for a while, and this is by far the closest I've come. It surprised me that I could still get a ton of chime with the Treble control all the way off! The Cut makes up for the goofy EQ'ing.
Hi input Cut - MAX MV - MAX Bass - OFF Mid - MAX Treb - OFF VOL - 12:00
Try it out, and let me know what you think!

I dialed it ion the MAZ 18 2x10. Was too bright for me, so I dialed back the Cut and the guitar tone to suit. It's got a lot of punch and sustain. Shows yet again that extreme settings on a Z remain musical and useful.

It is surprising how bright the amp can still be with the treble all of the way OFF. IMO, the amp sounds Fendery with the cut around 9:00 or so, and gets Voxy when it's turned past 2:00. I generally like the feel of the amp with the Cut high and the Treble down. I've gotten a lot of good sounds out of this amp; however, I have trouble with bright sounds as well and am continually fighting the Treble control. Even when I keep the Cut down to 9-10:00, I can't have the Treble higher than about 10:00 EVER. I do run bright speakers (Blue/Gold), but I have dark sounding tubes and my guitar/cabinet sound great with a lot of different heads.
Anyhow, glad you tried it out! Thanks for posting. I would guess that the MAZ 18 wouldn't sound quite as full as the 38 given the smaller OT (hence a potentially brighter sound given a lack of lows).

^^^
It's a usable sound, no doubt about it. The sustain was awesome.
It makes me curious about how the Cut function electronically. I'm pretty sure the MAZ tone stack is passive -- it can't boost frequencies -- so dialing Treble down attenuates the highs coming in from your guitar and coming out of the preamp. So is Cut actively boosting some part of the frequency range, or is it also just subtracting? Heck, it works. ;D

With the blue and the gold in there it may be tough to get the treble higher than 10:00 ish, but thats no big deal. You may be able to get it higher as you add more bass and mid. I think the best thing I ever did was to stop thinking about where the knobs are and set the tone with my ears, which is probably why people still come onto "strange settings" that sound good.

I was playing with this setting (and it sounded pretty cool).
What I found funny was after I was done messing around I wanted to play with my 335. My rig is generally set up for a Tele so I put everything at 12 O'Clock to get started. It sounded so good I didn't end up changing much except Master and Cut. I was having issues with muddy bottom on the 335 Live. The straight up setting opened it up and gave me great acoustic like clarity. It also gave me feedback more readily when the OCD was on. Even mundane settings sound killer.
