I am from a country that knows nothing about Dr Z.
I started researching clean amps a while ago and came across Dr Z.
Then I somehow managed to track down a store that had one amp. A Monza. I went to play it but was told it is only for overdrive. I played through a strat to try it. It didn't have the master and so when I wanted to test its overdrive, I had to put it on full. I found the volume overwhelming and therefore couldn't judge the sound properly.
But I was blown away by the cleaner sounds that came from it.
I decided I wouldn't buy it because I wanted a clean amp and it didn't have the master control.
So I put it out of my mind, but now I lie awake at night thinking of that amp. And I have decided I love it. So now I want to find out some stuff...
I still won't buy that one because I need the master. But I want to know, Does it really keep the quality of the overdrive when you put the master right down? And then also, can I get very good clean sounds out if it if I put the drive down? Was the shop correct when they said it is only a drive amp or is it more versatile than that?

Definitely more versatile than just driven amp with the master volume mod. It keeps the crunch and actually has a great fuzz sound at low MV with regular volume maxed!

I have been trying to decide between a Monza and a Ghia for a while now; my problem is that I have played with a Ghia but not a Monza - and it doesn't look like I'll get to try one unless I order one myself.
I can tell you that the Monza can get clean-ish... But if you need *cleans* you probably need a different amp. Even the Ghia, which is much less driven than the Monza, is not generally regarded as a clean amp.
