So I picked up a minty late model black/tan 66 off my local C-list. The only cab I currently have is my Genz Black Pearl 30 with a red fang. I ordered a matching Z 1x12 convertible and that should be here Wednesday.
I am wondering what speaker to pair with it, as I am not a V-30 fan. I try to avoid fatigue in the 2-4k region. I just got a Fane 100w Blue AlNiCo that has huge mids, but so does the 66. A little too angry. I tried an EVM-12L and it sounded great, though a bit sterile. The Red Fang wins so far. Thinking of trying a ASW KTS-70. Any thoughts? What have you found opens up the highs of the 66 without being strident while keeping the bass solid?
Thanks!

I like the Celestion G12H30 due to the strong mids that you mentioned. Sounds great with the Route.

Most users find the Vintage 30 to be too much in the way of mids for an amp like the Route 66 which is already mids happy.

Celestion G12H30 as others have mentioned, for a 12" Very nice balance there. Congrats on the Z - you picked a great first one. Welcome to the Z-brotherhood.

I recently discovered that a gold sounds delicious with the Route.
Also welcome.

So what I hear you guys saying is to avoid the g12h30, everybody hates it... I think that seals the deal on the KTS-70 for me then. It really is the Cadillac, no, mclaren of g12h style speakers that I have heard. I thought about sticking alnico, but I think I want those faster, thumping lows. May e throw a GZ34 in it too, as long as I don't lose that sweetness I am hearing now. About 7 hours till my cab shows up!!!

You will loose some of that sweetness, bloom, and character when you put in a GZ34. You'll get more volume and headroom, with a tighter sound. Also remember to rebias if you leave the GZ34 in there. You are upping your plate volts a touch.

G12H30 70th, G12H heritage, Celestion Gold, Altec 417 - in order of cost and reverse order of (IMHO) preference. Killer amp. At the moment I don't have a venue to use mine... but it's not going anywhere.

I also find the Jensen Jet Falcon 10" to be a good pairing for this amp - similar to a G12H30 to my ears (perhaps slightly brighter), but in a 10" package for those of us who don't want to lug around a 12" cab. I love the Red Fang, but not with the 66 - too much midrange.

So what I hear you guys saying is to avoid the g12h30, everybody hates it... I normally don't like the H. But when I had my Route 66...the H was a pretty good speaker to use with it. One of the few instances where I liked that speaker. The 66 is a bit of a mid heavy amp...and throwing a V30 with it...means mids on top of mids. The H is a scooped sounding speaker...so it's a good match for the amp.

FWIW I have hated the G12H30 with every amp I've used it with...except the Route. That is a killer combo. I'm tempted by a gold, but it would be tough to top the G12H30 I think.

Yep, don't like the G12H30 myself. I don't notice it so much in the Z-Best, but would never want it as a stand-alone 112. I tend to like 'gainy' amps and I find the G12H30 too 'round' for those sounds. These days I have been running my Route through my Reinhardt 112 cab with my Scumback BM-75 65 watter. Less bass and 'oomph' than the Z-Best...but breaks up pretty good. Keith

I have a 1x12 with a G12H30, and a 1x12 with a Celestion Gold. Either sound fantastic. Together.....incredible!!
