I play a Z-28 1x10 Combo w/ Ramrod (and add a 2x12 cabinet if I need to move more air) and some pedals. Mostly it's for very sane jobs (weddings, social events, etc.), so the 28 works fine, but I have my own band that I lead and write for (gtr./bass/drums/4 horns/singer, sort of a cross between Tower of Power, BS&T and the Brecker Brothers) that plays outside and in larger venues so I'm looking at getting a higher powered Z head, but I need a good bit of clean headroom. The Mazerati attracts me (I've never played one) because it seems to have certain characteristics of the Ghia (which I have played). I know that with some pre-amp tube swap-outs that I can increase the headroom, hopefully enough to play jazz, but I need to know if you guys think a Mazerati is the way to go or some other Z (Remedy, Maz 38, KT45). I'll still be using some pedals and going into a 2x12 cab with Vin30s. I plan to play a Guild Bluesbird, a Tele and a Strat into whatever I get.
Thanks.

My Mazerati has the exact same preamp and phase inverter circuit and my old Ghia with added power tubes and beefier power supply.
Very similar feel with more headroom and a bit more bottom.

I've got one of the first if not the first V2 made made its got tons of clean headroom! Up till about two or three o clock then it starts to break up, but that's pretty dang loud!

I'm on tour right now, but my uncle lives in Columbia. And I have some shows in Camden on the weekend of October 5. I'll bring my mazerati if you wanna look at it.

Mazerati V2 has lots of clean headroom but I don't know if it would be enough for Jazz, unless the venues were medium to small and the band wasn't too loud. When I play medium to larger venues in a country/rock band where I need sparkly clean I take my Fender Dual Pro.

Really, the only jazz application for this amp would be in my own band, and that's only about 20% of the book (like I've written a chart of Basie's "Spankly" and some charts Miles Davis' stuff), and a little hair will work in that context. For strictly jazz jobs I usually play my Heritage or ES330 through either a Polytone or Vibrolux, the venues are medium to small and you're right, the Mazerati may be too much (but my evil twin may have to try it - and apologize to the leader later).
BTW, I just pulled the trigger on kc's Mazerati that was on BST; s/b here later in the week, and then let the experimenting begin!
