Hey Z-Talkers,
Just posted this at the Gear Page and want to know what you guys think.
I really dig the sound of my Maz 38 with the preamp volume dimed. I can dial in a very cool, percussive, chiming overdrive tone. As Maz 38 users probably know, there's enough compression so it feels good and is fun to play but there's still plenty of bite and snap: the low strings stay tight and piano-ish. I can get sounds close to both of the Young brothers.
Thing is, I can also get some great clean/verge-of-breakup tones from the Maz. I wish Dr. Z would make a two-channel Maz but since I doubt he's going to do this in the near future if ever, I was wondering:
Are there any overdrive pedals that get close to the sound of the Maz's inherent overdrive tone, i.e. that have some of that tight, percussive, snappy kerrang? I don't mean just overdrive pedals that sound good with the Maz (which I know have been discussed here) but pedals that sound LIKE the Maz's overdrive, that have some characteristics similar to the Maz's drive tones? This way, I can keep the Maz set cleanish and then have a dirt pedal that would mimic the drive tones I like so much.
I'm not sure if "transparent" drives like the Tim/Timmy would do the trick since the Maz preamp volume seems to introduce a slight upper mid boost when dimed.
The Lovepedal Amp 11 and Kalamazoo might be contenders but I'm not sure.
Maybe some TS variant: LGW, Eternity, Phantom?
A Plexi-ish sorta thing: I'm wondering about the Rockett Flexi Drive.
Box of Rock?
And yes, I do work my guitar's volume control for clean/dirty but that's not always practical in my bands.
Thank you.

My Maz 38 rocked. A wampler Plextortion comes to mind. They say it can do the Pinnacle thing also. I guess it depends on what year Plexi you are talking about too. Cuz' didn't some plexis have master volumes?
