Hmm, the posting has slowed down a bit around here in the Maz 8 section. I'm pleased to think that everyone is that happy with their amp that questions and comments are no longer needed lol anything new? ? Todd

Shh! the Maz 8's a keeper. I've been pretty busy (not playing) the last few months, so it hasn't got the love she deserves lately.

LOL!
I've done two rehearsals and one gig with the 8 and so far, so good. Observations:
- The speaker (G12H30) does indeed need break-in. Already the sound and response are are more "coherent" than when new. - It is plenty loud for the bar / small club gigs we've done. I am glad I got the Brake Lite. - Overall tone is quite bright, particularly with my Teles. No issue here, I just dial it in using my ears and not my eyes (Treble and Cut knobs well below noon). I also use that little tone knob on the Tele to dial in some goodness. - Compared to my Maz38 Sr, the 8 is way more "bratty". The 38 has a rich, 3D sound that I'd describe as sophisticated, and I need to use pedals (Timmy, Fulltone 69) to get some good crunch going on. The 8 seems like it's always ready to spew forth it's opinion. First time I played it in a band situation, I felt like Peter Parker in that latest Spiderman flick right after he got his powers -- he had to work to control himself to keep from ripping the bathroom sink off the wall when turning off the water. Again, no issue. - The EQ bypass is beautifully voiced for my ear. - Solos are effortless, both with and without the EQ bypass. - The Timmy is of no value with this amp. The tone is already there. - Our drummer said he loves the tone. And unlike some drummers, he's got an ear.
All of this is good, and yes I am happy! Just what I wanted -- a Yang to the 38's Yin. As is often the case with really good gear, there's a bonding period; you have to learn to play it and, more importantly, you have to let IT play YOU.
Major kudos to Doc for creating a real winner. Thank you!

I agree, Sparrowhawk, except for the gigging part, cause I only play my Maz at home (I hope my G12H is going to break in anyway). The EQ bypass is a bless! I just got a BB Preamp, which sounds great... But I keep wondering: do I really need this pedal aside from such a great tone I have from the amp on his own? A good tremolo and a good delay in the loop and that's it. Thank you Doc and Dr Z community for what I can hear in my own living room for a few weeks!

Thank you! Lol. Peter Parker... It is a great little amp. I'm still trying to figure out which speaker I like with it. I can live with the G12H30, but it's never been my favorite. My other Z's I like to use with less efficient speakers, but the with the 8 I prefer to have a more efficient speaker to help add some extra volume.

^^^ mine was part of the initial release so it can stock with the blue in it and once it broke in I was very happy with the speaker. It just took forever, especially since at the time was primarily running in triode mode. Now with the speaker broke in I am using Pentode mode all the time

I was surprised by how much the amp opened up when I played it in a larger room (at home) and could get some distance between me and the little red guy. Loved the sound -- no pedals needed.

I wish I could say my lack of posting was because I was so busy playing my new Maz 8, but I won't be getting it until next week. Heard today that it's built and on the bench being tested. I fully expect to be posting my drooling love-struck rave right here by the end of next week.

This is one of the reasons I go for the head/cab option. I love putting the cab on the other side of the room and opening it up a bit while still having the head at my fingertips for tweaking. The other reason is that I'm better able to make 2 trips with lighter boxes than one trip with a heavier box. hoby

^^^ heads are a nice way to go, less tube rattle, less feedback issues with the reverb . . . . still, I love the combos amps lol Mike, I hear you on a bigger room sound for this amp, it can be a little in your face when you up close and in a small room Todd

The only issue I have with my Maz 8 head is my face hurts from the big ol' smile I'm wearing each time i plug in!! I have been running it through an Avatar 1x12 w/ Greenback. Really digging that combo. It's killer with the 2x12 Z-Best too. I like the option of being able to plug into different cabs.

- The Timmy is of no value with this amp. The tone is already there. Respectfully disagree. I run my 8 clean-ish. Use the Timmy constantly. Great pedal + Great amp = Beautiful music

Thank you! I agree with everything except the timmy (using a Tim actually). It's the only OD i like with the Maz 8. What i love about the pedal is that it doesn't change the tone of the amp, it enhances it.

^ (Previous 2 posts about Timmy)
For the record, IMO the Timmy is the best OD I have ever used and if I have my way, I wouldn't play my Maz38 without it. What I meant by the "no value" line is that the 8 all by itself is giving me an OD sound that I'm really digging, to the point where I'm not even thinking about needing an OD pedal. I'm sure as I bond with the 8, I'll start experimenting with OD pedals (probably with cleaner amp settings) to see what comes out. Heck, I have enough dirt boxes... ;-)

I was playing mine tonight at rehearsal... Decided to try a modified Dynacomp with it just for a little more sustain with a Tele. WOW I love this amp. I'm going to be using it on the next couple of gigs.
