OK this will show how little I know about guitars but I'm trying to learn. I have a 69 Strat that I love, a newer LP studio that is great for many of the sounds I like. So here is the question: Is there a guitar or set up that has a second tone or pickup switch that will take humbuckers down to single coils so you would have the combination of single and double coils in one guitar?

You can tap humbucker pickups for single coil sounds but they must have 4 conductor wiring.Lindy Fralin makes a pickup called an unbucker that was made special for taping and they sound great.........Sterling

"highway61south has his chops together! ;D The humbucking pickups must have 4-wire conductors. As you probably can guess from my post, Seymour Duncan also have humbuckers with 4-conductor wiring. Cheers: Dixiechicken

oldguy, IMHO, You may also want to consider either Fralins Unbucker or Lollar Imperials (both available with 4 wire conductors). Rick

Pretty well most humbuckers today (at least aftermarket ones) have 4 wire conductors for tapping.

Thanks for the advice, I will have to decide if I want to make some changes on my LP. Is there a guitar that is already set up this way?

I have an old Heritage H140 with Duncans. I had pull pots put in for the tone pots. I pull them up and get single coils. Works well and no need to drill new holes so it looks stock.

When I put the Seymour Duncan P-90 stacks into my Les Paul - I brought out the hammer and chisel to make the pickup routing holes deeper. The P-90 stacks are somewhat higher/thicker than stock P-90:s. You don't have to do this on every Paul I believe. You can all take deep breath and calm yourseves. ;D My "Paul" was NOT in mint/original condition when I bought it. ( it was repaired & repainted to a paul 59 burst type of paint - instead of stock Goldtop - long story ) Cheers: Dixiechicken

Dixiechicken, how do you like the Seymour Duncan P-90 stacks? I have heard only negative comments on thegearpage about them because they aren't single coil P-90s. I have a Les Paul with particularly noisey P-90s that I'm thinking of changing out. I also have another LP type guitar with noiseless Dimarzio virtual P-90s that I like but they look kind of ugly (2 rows of screws).

"garyh" - DC here!
I used to have the DiMarzios for a while on my Paul but switched back to stock P90:s I like the P90 stacks from Duncan much better. Both in series an parallel they sound much more balanced and clearer to my ears.
There is a clear difference in sound though compared to the stock P90:s - and the stacks. The stacks sound a bit mellower to me.
If I compare the Tele Vintage Stacks with Tele single coil vintage - I can hear no difference in sound - very very similar to my ears at least.
Not so if you compare the P90:s with the P90:s stacks. Then there is a difference but I don't find it objectionable. The stacks sound somehow more contemporary - the stock P90:s a little more primitive.
In parallel the Duncans have a very nice mellow character great for cleaner jazzy bluesy sounds. In series more grit & rock'n roll.

Hi Oldguy, Thanks for the advice, I will have to decide if I want to make some changes on my LP. Is there a guitar that is already set up this way? Yes, the MusicMan Axis SuperSport is set up with tapped humbuckings. I have one. It's a 5 position switch like a traditional strat. Starting with the switch toward the neck it's: neck pup un-tapped, neck pup tapped, both pups un-tapped, bridge pup tapped, bridge pup un-tapped. The stock pups are Dimarzio. Also, James Tyler makes 2 versions of his Ultimate Weapon model and both versions are available with tapped buckers. To my ears tapped buckers sound similar to single coils but they're not exact replicas. There's definitely a difference. I prefer the sound of actual single coils. Tapped buckers will definitely get you in the ball park, though. Regards, Eliot
