I was playing around with the Monza a bit today and I think I'm real close to getting it to work for me. Got it to where I had a great crunchy rhythm sound with just the guitar (Strat/Lollars), and a nice singing lead tone with my LTD SR set at very low gain. Other OD pedals can make it pretty fizzy, and I was starting to lose hope, but this is a breakthrough of sorts. Now if I could refine it a bit more and get that perfect setting where I've got my crunch with the volume rolled back and a louder, sustaining lead tone just using the guitar volume, I'd be using the amp the way I'd hoped to when I bought it.
There's still a Ghia 1x10 in my future, but maybe not just yet...

you know, you going about this the right way, taking your time and working the knobs. A little extra OD from a pedal or from a pedal realy can be too much of a good thing quickly with this amp since it was designed to OD often and early all on its own. sound bites? ??

I'll try to throw something up later today. Local alt newspaper coming to take my pitcher this afternoon (always an adventure), then gotta take my moms to the grocery store (ditto). So, evening, maybe. But I was just now messing with a Strat just with a little delay--farting around with "Honkytonk Woman"--and dang if it didn't sound good. There's a top-end bite I'm still trying to tame a bit,but with both tone controls on the Strat about half and the Monza's tone at 10:00, it's working. This is V and D at 1:00, T at 10:00, MV at 11:00, BL on 2 'cause I like not having tinnitus. Working the guitar volume between rhythm and lead. That's harder to do in a band because our lead guitarist doesn't always back off as much as he should on my solos, but I'll just keep kicking him in the shins until he figures it out.

So this is interesting. I emailed Don at Z repairs and he said there's a couple of bright caps in the newer Monzas that "open up the high end" as you roll the MV down. That might explain some of slightly harsh high end I'm hearing on some settings. He also says feel free to swap tubes (naturally), so I might play around a bit with that.

Just swapped out the JJs for EHs. Noticeably warmer. Might see if I can go warmer yet.

Mike at KCA recommends TADs. I think I've got a pair around here somewheres...

Nope--TAD boxes with JJs in 'em. Dang--where's ma TADs? But, I did swap out the 5AR4 for a GZ34, also Don's suggestion, and NOW we're gettin' somewhere. Still breaks up early lik it's supposed to, but it's much warmer. Obviously, since I've cracked her open and swapped tubes, I'm not sending her back.

So really liking my new Monza. And after reading what you said about warming things up a bit - I'm always one for that. And being a bit unschooled in the Tube Universe, wondering what brands of Tube ( 12AY7 / GZ34 ) you might recommend for swapping? Don't need the $150 Audiophile Model, but also don't want to shoot for bargain Basement ( Unless - As in some cases - Generic can be exactly the same thing ). Thanks........DP

Swapped out V1 with a 12AY7 - quite a difference. Really tamed the Beast. I think this will be just fine.
