Ok, so I got this little Legacy on eBay (Tribute series.) Seems like a decent enough guitar. String spacing is a little narrow for my tastes, so I'm sure a new nut will probably get me closer to where I want to be.
Question is, I haven't really figured out these pickups yet, nor have I figured out the controls.
They appear to be different than a typical Strat. Top pot is master volume, middle seems to be a master tone, and I still haven't figured out what the third one is doing. SOme type of frequency sweep it sounds like, although VERY subtle.
Also, the pickups sound VERY hard to me. I've got their adjusted about where"vintage style" pickups would normally be. But I'm suspecting that the output of these might be quite a bit more than, say, a Fralin or similar...
According to the G & l site, they are alnico V "vintage style." But I'm wqndering if anyone knows the specs on these... Are they more high output, sort of like Texas Special? If so, I may have to lower them quite a bit, as they hit the amp hard, and without a really pleasing attack..
Would love insight on these pickups if there's anyone here that uses them and loves 'em, since supposedly they come in the USA Legacy's too...
Thanks, J

The 2nd pot should be treble, the 3rd should be bass. I don't havs a guitar with those particular pick-ups but thats how my Legacy Special is set up as far as the knobs go.. ...the mfd's are the hot ones....that I do know....Good Luck...I've played some Legacy's in stores and they never seemed harsh to me...Never played a Tribute. From what I understand they have the same pickups but different pots and maybe caps...

Jay, the pots should be a master volume, a treble adjust and a bass adjust - they operate somewhat different than a regular Fender set-up. As for the pick-ups - I think they are/were based on Seymour Duncan single coils, but can't recall which ones specifically. I have an American Legacy, and I lowered the pick-ups a couple of turns within the first couple of days of owning - that was over 3 years ago and I haven't changed the height since. Just a couple of other thoughts - if you are using a Maz - check the Cut setting. If you are using a 28 or a Ghia, then maybe you might consider easing up on the treble. Joel just my .02, ymmv, etc, etc, etc p.s. is it an ash, alder or basswood body? that may throw some curve into the equation [glow=red,2,300] edit:[/glow] I usually set the treble adjust around 3 and the bass adjust around 8/9 - should take out some of the bite/sting of the p/u

It's probably the Alnico 5 magnets. I've never got on with them in pickups for some reason-- I love the Alnico 2s myself.

I have been checking out G&L's for the past couple of months. I have found this site very helpful with the models and pickup descriptions. www.guitarsbyleo.com/faq.php3Bill

Like I said, I needed something "decent" to bang around. Having "disposable" guitars is a very common thing in these parts.. Especially when you consider the abuse your instruments can take when you do this to pay your light bill... This Tribute was cheap ($225 on eBay), plays ok, and if it gets smashed, stolen, or falls out of the cargo bay of a 737, I won't be heart-broken... J

The guitar isn't bad. Not great, but not bad. Certainly useable. The pickups sound ok, just lack a little character when compared to, say, a set of Fralins. I'll probably drop some DiMarzio Area 58/61's in there. I kinda dig the interesting tone control layout. Kind of neat that you can dial *out* some bass for cleaner passages without affecting the amount of treble. Definitely a cool little player's axe. Has some potential with some tweaking...
