Anyone running the Hotplate into their Zwreck? I wad told by my guitar teacher that he prefers it in his Trainwrecks over the Airbrake, especially at lower volumes....
I can get one used but will have to get it shipped in....so I can't test it.
TIA,

I used my THD Hot Plate a lot with the Wreck. Works great. The few sound clips I posted were with the Hot Plate since my Airbrakes were all busy elsewhere.

Hi Steve:
Thanks for your reply. would you care to compare the airbrake to the hotplate in terms of which one you prefer and why?
Did you ever use the brake with the z wreck? J5

Well the two devices approach the problem quite differently. The Airbrake is largely a resistive device, although those big old wirewound resistors probably have a good chunk of inductance too. The Hot Plate is anybody's guess - I see big old potted resistors in there, but also coils, caps, switches and even a fan that is powered from the amp's output! The Airbrake is spec'd to work with amps that have 4, 8 or 16 ohm outputs. The Hot Plate is built for one impedance only. That's why I have three of them - I needed 4 ohm, 8 ohm, and 16 ohm over the course of time. Right there is a giant difference, cost-wise. Tone wise I never really noticed a huge difference - the Hot Plate has a bit more attenuation available, and has a line out that is practically worthless. I like the controls on the front and the jacks on the back of the Hot Plate, but never found the odd arrangement on the Airbrake to be much of an issue. I definitely think the Airbrake sounds better on Z amps, and the Hot Plate sounded best on my THD Flexi-50. Imagine that. I spent a considerable amount of time recording and comparing both once - let me see here....AH! here it is: ztalk.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=gotopost&board=soundfiles&thread=6624&post=66310Those recordings were all clean for a reason, but if you take the time to read the whole thread you'll see that I did hear a difference between them, although it wasn't a very big difference. Of course I'm almost deaf too...

Steve, that was an interesting comparison you did in your post. I bought the THD and rec'd it last week. I do like the flexibility of the bright and deep switches, especially at -16db, however it does not really justify another $300 investment for me. Will I sell it? No, I can't see me selling it at this point. As foolish as this may sound I like the footprint better too and it sits on the head better.
If the Airbrake sounds better on the Wreck, I ain't hearing it. Unless I had two z wrecks side by side, one with the Airbrake and one with the Hot Plate and an a-b switch, I probably wouldn't be able to anyhow.
