Hi everybody,
I started a thread in the cabs and speakers section about cabs for the ezg50. It kind of developed into talking more about the amp itself so I have pasted my last post below here as well. (If doing this is not cool, please let me know, I am new here.)
Well, I finally got to play a set through a EZG-50 and Z 2 x 10 last night. I had heard others play this rig before and played alongside this rig a few times using my own amps. The tones that others got through this rig had usually been pretty cool. It is a jam night situation so the host guitarist (his rig) plays and always gets, to my ear, good to great tones.
I really struggled last night trying to dial it in for me. (I should say that my playing background is in BF fender and tweed bassman lands--played a lot in the late seventies to about 1990--took a long time off--just getting back to it and trying to get my equipment/sound together.) So last night things were sounding very middy to me, not in a good way. I kept backing the mids down but could never quite get to the blackface style tone I wanted. Now I will be the first to admit that it could be I just need to spend more time with the amp and that there is a learning curve to master. I'm wondering though, as I think of my tweed bassman clone with its light, open 4x10 cab and less efficient speakers...I wonder if the ezg might sound a lot different through a similar cab. I really want to like the ezg50. I need a louder amp as my tweed clone is only about 32 watts and that gives me the real sweet tweed sound--my goal for my 2nd amp is a louder blackface style sound. I am worried that the ezg might not get close enough to my blackface comfort zone. But then again, I saw a video of Anson Funderburgh playing through one and his tone was like what I am looking for--I think he was using a 4x10 cab. His tone on the video sounded pretty close to classic blackface fender so maybe I can get there too.
Just throwing this out there for you guys. I appreciate the warm welcome and there is a lot of collected Z wisdom out there, I can tell. Look forward to any thoughts.
