I played with my regular band on Friday night at one of the bigger clubs around town. We were doing our normal Country/Red Dirt-Outlaw/Rock gig (which ended up being more rock this night). The RxJr sounded amazing and took the OD pedals really good. I don’t know what it is, but EF86 preamp based amps really take the pedal tone and make it part of the amp. It’s different than a 12ax7. My leads were a bit warmer or smoother on the neck pickup, but still plenty of presence to cut through – On the bridge pickup it was full, round and bitey (in a good way).
*During sound check, they popped an e609 on my cab (Weber Alnico Blue Dog speaker) and asked me to play a little…… the sound man said, “wow, that sounds amazing.. I don’t have to touch a single knob on your channel”! It took about 10 minutes for him to dial in my other guitarist rig (a modeling amp).
This band is REALLY loud and most “Non Z” amps in the 15-18wt range don’t cut it. The RxJr was cranked pretty hard, but was the perfect volume. I had the master cranked and the volume about 2:30-3:00. Clean enough to be considered clean (with a Tele), but had nice “hair” around the notes when you dug in just a little. The RxJr isn’t quite as loud as the Maz Jr NR, but it does have decent amt of headroom. It is louder than a Ghia.
My 2nd gig, on Saturday, was with my “part time” band, a more “Nashville” pop country style with a female singer. We opened for the Ozark Mountain Daredevils in front of about 2500 people. They also had an e609 on my little 1x12 cab and it sounded amazing through the mains and I had plenty of stage volume, I actually backed the master down to around half way. Once again, the sound man (different from the previous night) said “I only had to touch the gain knob on your channel”. The other guitarist plays a Twin and the sound man liked his tone as well and only had to pull out some lows.
I am SOOOOO happy and impressed with this amp. I’m having a hard time with one thing though…. Either I’m still in the Honeymoon phase, or I like it as much as (or more than) my beloved Hayseed?!? I have not said that about any other amps in the past 3 or 4 years that I’ve owned it. So before I finalize that statement, I’m going to hold off a few months and see how I feel at that time.
