After blowing a preamp fuse in the Wreck at last Sat nites gig and having to negotiate past the 4 screws retaining the tube protection grill, it left me considering taking a back up amp to gigs...something I've never done. But perhaps a Classic 30...small enough to pack with the other gear I'm already hauling and not take up too much stage space, but strong enough to do the job. How many of you take a back up amp to gigs? And if so, what?

I always take a back up, usually a Stangray head. Only time I've used a backup so far is only when I get bored and switch amps between sets or songs. I also keep a couple fuses and some tubes in my car.

Spare head...good idea. I've got a Ghia head I could carry...smaller than the C30 and sounds a lot better too.

I take the MAZ 18 head as a backup if my primary amp is the Z Wreck as the cabinet is 16 ohms. I have the new MAZ 18 with the 16 ohm out. For smaller shows I take my 1x12 (8 ohm) I bring both the Carmen Ghia and MAZ 18. The speaker in the 1x12 is a Celestion blue 15 watt so the Z Wreck head would smoke it. I know you can use a higher ohm cabinet but I rather keep them matched. I haven't had an issue yet but it is nice to know you have a backup. My other guitar player doesn't maintain his tube amp at all so it is only a matter of time and he will need a backup amp during a show. It is always nice to have that piece of mind.

I just purchased an Electro-Harmonix 44 Magnum as an emergency backup amp. Obviously, it won't sound as good as any of the Dr. Z amps but in a pinch it should work well enough. Plus, it's a relatively cheap option for the security of a backup amp that can easily be packed up in any small equipment bag.

If I didn't have a Crate Powerblock I would get the EH Magnum. Both are easier than another head or full amp and will get you there as needed.

Yea I learned the hard way out of town show tube blows no tubes around had to play in the pa no amp. That sucked so now I carry a complete set of all the tubes in my amp to every show to be safe I have a RXES I run all nos tubes in it now. I also carry fuses and tools to fix any problem that may come up.

I have the .22 cal, but I've heard even better things about the .44 Mag. I played an entire three-hour gig with one and forgot I was using it at times. Eddie

I recently purchased a EH Mag 44 to use as a backup--way easier to haul around than an extra head. Does not sound as good as a Z of course but has enough power and sounds good enough to get you through a gig. Really a great product IMHO---Jester
