Set one...4 tunes to go...severe vol drop mid song...band plays on...I start a mid tune tech drill...unplugged from pedal board...straight into amp... changed cables, then changed guitars...put the Tele on the stand and tried the LP. Oh yeah...doing all this between lyric lines as Im lead singer. Finished out the set by going direct from the pedal board to the PA. At the break pulled the back grill and started diagnosing tubes. Middle Preamp tube had failed. B3 player had a spare...one...back up and running full steam for set two. Wierd though...premature tube failure for sure. Probably a good idea to replace the other two also. I've always carried extra output tubes ....now gonna carry some spare preamp tubes in the gigbag. Rest of the gig went great and was a total gas.

Strange/weird/rare fer sure.
Fwiw.....I carry a spare 12AX7 as well. Happened 2 me once(ECC83 in a Ghia). NEVER know when modern glass is gonna go bad. Cheap insurance.
Glad all worked out 4 U.

Sorry to hear that. But great job testin' and getting back on line.
What a testament to Mike Mathews ( Electro Harmonics ) overpriced Tung-Sol reissue 12AX7's. They should last years. Mike got so pissed at me for sending 135 of these back do to various problems, that he will no longer allow me any warranty on them.
Great sounding tubes, but as all currant production tubes they are prone to high failure.

I have a friend who does amp repairs who had the same thing happen to him. He had a bunch not even light up when they arrived and they gave him a problem about sending them back. He waited too long they said. Guess you have to check them all the day they come in. No warranty for him anymore too. No tubes for you, next.

Dr Z, Thanks for the info Doc. Looking at JJ's? Mullards? Svetlana? Groove? Sovtek? Kinda leaning toward JJs. any preferences? Boy I do like the Tung-Sols in the Z-Wreck. I really haven't had many problems with them once they get through my burn in and QA at the factory, but I do reject my share. If you can find NOS Ei 12AX7's Pre-war that is in Bosnia those sound increadable but again tough to source. DR.Z

I agree -with the Tung-Sols in there the amp sounds very amazing. Kinda odd to think of Bosnia as a source for anything that would benefit the world of music, but what do I know? I'm just a guitar player. Thanks for the input.

Update on the tube replacement: I ended up putting in a JJ to replace the one blown Tung-Sol. The amp sounds great. Gave it a test drive with the Strat and Tele last night. Back in business! Got a few extras to pack in the gig bag too.
